Six Year Old Still Co-Sleeping

posted 12th Nov
My six year old has always slept with me. I tried a fee different times when he was littler to let him cry it out, but I just couldn't stand to hear him cry for literally hours. The problem is that I'm ready to get him out of my bed now and he still cries hysterically for hours. He cried the other night when I tried it from 8:30 (bedtime) until almost 3 am. Screamed, begged, threw things. And then when he finally fell asleep, it was for less than a half hour and then he was right in my room crawling in my bed again. I tried letting him sleep with a small lamp on because he's scared, I don't know what else to do. He's gotten really bad about not wanting to be alone. He doesn't even want to go in another room if he'll be alone. And he won't go to bed withou me even in my bed. I'm at a loss here. And it's not just since the new baby came, he's always been like this. Any suggestions?

Try moving him after he falls asleep in your bed. My son who is 6 still crawls in be every now and then. We just move him. Also try laying with him until he falls asleep and then you get out of his bed and place a body pillow next to him.

did you try laying down with him in his bed then getting up after he falls asleep...maybe leave tv on or lay a stuffed animal or pillow next to him when u do get up so he feels safe?

Tell him he's a big boy now and its time to.sleep on ur own... I'm not to sure my oldest is 6 and he's always slept in his room and thrn my middle boy who is 4 screams till he comes into our room again and sometimes he will wait till we are asleep and sneak by dad, at this point I only told him he needs to sleep on his own with his brother and he now gets that but from time to time he fights with us. He may not be ready yet

put your damn foot down. He's crying hysterically because he knows you're a push over. every time he throws a fit, ignore him and put him back in bed. As long as he's not hurt, ignore him. He'll cry himself to sleep.

I wouldn't be putting up with that smurf at 3 let alone 6.

My 4 year old sleeps with us, but when I tell her she needs to sleep in her own room, she does it. Sometimes she does it on her own.

I agree with this complety.

though i dont know the problem so i cant say from experience, My LO wont sleep with us, ha ive tried. he gets too worked up. im sure if we did when he was an infant then he still would want to though.

i agree, put your foot down, and the more he cries have some sort of punishment thing, like for every 15 min of crying then he has less play time or something.
if he is legitimately scared though idk what i would do.

it must be so annoying having slept with a kid in the bed for the past 6 years though,,,

Why is he afraid of being alone? That's something I'd address first. I'd get him a nightlight or something for bedtime. I assume at this age he has a set bedtime routine? Do you read before bed? I would stand in his doorway after you lay him down for the first few days, after that tell him you'll be back to check on him in a minute. I'm sure he will become more secure being by himself when he sees nothing bad is going to happen.

You are not the only one. my best friends 7 yr old dd still co-sleeps, well my friend as been sleeping in her dd's bed since she was two before that it was dd in her bed. lol

She cant break her, she tried. She refused to lay with her for 3 days, and for those 3 days that kid did not sleep. lol it was annoying as anything, I was staying there a week, and she was so tired lol so her mom finally gave in to her, that was about a yr ago, so at 7 she still co-sleeps.
