Fancy cake...no fondant.

I want a nice cake for my daughters 3rd birthday...what are my options if I don't want fondant used? Character theme is Hello Kitty. Pics, ideas and recipes are highly appreciated!

Buttercream ?

I kinda suck lol but I tossed this together for my daughters first birthday.

check out "frozen buttercream transfer" on youtube.

Its super cool. Basicaly you can take a pic and draw it out in icing on wax paper. Then you freeze it and peel it off.

I did an amazing wizard of oz cake with all tbe characters.

I found a tutorial on making buttercream super smooth. Basically you get it as flat as possible with a cake spatula and then after it gets a thin crust smooth it out with a papertowel, the viva kind without a pattern. This was my daughters cake after using that technique.






Not perfect but I probably could have gotten it there had I put more effort into it, LOL
I did this too for my youngest daughters 2nd


It was filled with strawberry ice cream!

Use buttercream and pipe it out. Looks good and its easy

Buttercream! I had it on my wedding cake because I detest fondant! Yuck!! lol

You can color the buttercream and decorate it that way or you can check out rice paper transfers. I used it on my husbands birthday cake

It came out really nice! They also have tons of hello kitty designs as well. I got his on google for 9.99 for the both of the transfers.
