Thats not true actually. They can give you the shots even if you are not in the hospital. With my second I got the first shot right in the doctor's office it was only when they hooked me up to the monitor and saw I was contracting they admitted me but still would have given me the shots outpatient. My specialist also told me something different about them being most effective for a week not just 48 hours. It takes 48 hours for them to fully kick in from what I've been told. She wants a positive ffnt. Also I have had a friend given the shots without being in the hospital. They gave them to her around the same time that she always seems to deliver. It really depends on the doctor/hospital I would say.

I didn't mean that you couldn't get them if you weren't in the hospital. I meant that that was probably why they wouldn't give them to you. I must have gotten the explanation confused... I think you're right about 48 hours being how long it takes to optimally work. Sorry and thank you for setting me straight!
