Help with tantrums

posted 12th Nov
So LO is 2 and has started throwing the WORST tantrums usually when she doesn't get her way. It gets to the point where she is flailing around and purposely hits her head on things (the floor, the walls, the bed, anything she's near). If we hold her it just makes it worse and and she tries even harder to hurt herself.

I have no idea what to do at this point. DH gives up and gives in and I know every time he does this it just reinforces the behavior and I try to tell him this but it's like what else can we do?

She's frustrated, we're frustrated, and we just don't know what to do at this point. How the hell do we get her to get through the tantrum without her hurting herself and without us giving in and giving her what she wants? I'm at a loss at this point on what to do.

Have you tried putting her in a safe place (away from furniture with carpet) and ignoring her until she is done?

That is what I do with my kids, then when they are done I talk to them and explain I know that they are angry/sad/frustrated but throwing a fit is not the way to express it. Now they are older and understand better, we discuss ways to get that anger out without fits.

Yes, she just lays on the ground and will try to hit her head on the floor instead. Even with the carpet it's still pretty hard for someone to try and smack their head against it.

Also we have talked to her doctor about this and he basically said to ignore it. I just can't see ignoring her if she's really trying to hurt herself though.

Do you try talking to her calmly? I've realized when Christopher throws a tantrum I let him know I'll talk to him when he's calmed down, and ready to stop. Talking to him usually calms him down. I've read you're really supposed to ignore it, it only makes it worse.

Yeah talking doesn't help much either. She's soooo stubborn! When we try and talk to her she'll just scream bloody murder and NOOOO.

my daughter started doing that around 18m and she grew out of it..i was scared to discipline her, but another thing you can try is time our or mimic her so she can see how she's acting..if nothing else the mimicking will stop her and make her laugh gl.
