I feel the need to make a timeline, lol. On the 6th my dreads are 3 months old and are finally starting to look semi-decent

The day I did them:

A month old:

And today, 3 months old!   My hair has started to grow   After I dreaded, my hair shrunk a couple inches, and now it's almost back down to its original length

Lol not naive!

There's several difference ways.

You can do neglect/natural which is where you just stop brushing your hair. You still wash it but just don't brush. I started mine neglect then did a different method.

There's backcombing which is exactly how it sounds; You section the hair and comb up toward your scalp til the hair is knotted.

And there's twist and rip which is a tad more complicated. It's how I finished mine. You section the hair, pull it into two pieces, twist it, and rip upward til it knots.

I'm part black.
I just have weird hair.

What is coil? I've heard of crochet, but I heard it's also really damaging.

no its not damaging. just dreading with a crochet tool and they dont fall out easily at the start up process. Thats what i have, I have sisterlocks which are micro dreads.

Coil is using a rat tail comb and twisting the hair around it until it stays. Those take FOREVER to lock, or if you just want to look locked but dont want to keep them. They look super neat in the process though. (have to use beeswax or dread gel)

Coiling sounds painful, ouch.
The way I did mine was painful enough.

My natural hair is ridiculously curly unorganized ringlets. But when it was straightened with a flat iron it was stick straight and really pretty. But it took almost 2 hours to flat iron all of it because I have a TON of hair. I got tired of straightening it and only straightened my hair like, twice in a year...so I decided to dread them.
IDK, I'm going for the more messy type look. I love them.

Yeah it's definitely time consuming. But now the only maintenance I have to do on my hair is washing it, lol. It's such a relief to not have to brush it or flat iron it or anything. Just wake up and go

I love it! I used to dread(haha) doing my hair if I had to go somewhere. Now there's only two things: up in a ponytail, or down.
