re: circumcision, family vs you

posted 12th Nov
My situation is the reverse of yours. Me and SO want it done if we have a son, and my mom believes it's mutilation. in her words "If you wouldn't mutilate your little girl, why would you do it to your son?"
but we are sticking by what we decided.
I agree with the other ladies here, stick to your guns.

DH is circ'd and we didnt circ DS just because we couldnt afford it. But after hearing the horror story from my best friend who did circ her son I am not entirely sure we would do it for another son if we have one.

You both are the parents it's up to you. If your husband is uncomfortable with it and wants his son intact like he is.. then I would probably go for what the husband wants. Or you can talk to him about it and see. But it's for you two to decide.
My son is circumcised and I'm pregnant with another little boy and he will be circumcised aswell. My husband is circumcised and every male on both sides of our fam are circed.
I don't get into huge debates with this. I think it's up to the parents to decide together. I don't think anything bad about staying intact or being circed. And aruging about it just goes around in circles.

I didn't. I just don't see the point. No one does it in my family or his dad's family.

Idk if its just my area, but I've noticed that most Mexicans don't circumcise their sons but most white people do, just from the moms I know.

We will not be doing it because I believe it's abuse and should be illegal.

We had our son circumcised and I was at the hospital when it happened. They gave him some kind of oral medication that made him tired, wheeled him off, and he was back in the nursery within 10 minutes. For a while I didn't think much of what happened during those 10 minutes but after doing some research I've come to the conclusion that I wish we hadn't done it.

It is not medically necessary and I don't think my baby should go through pain and suffering unless it's needed to improve his health in some way.

I don't necessarily regret it and quite honestly I think men who are cut look far better but appearance doesn't matter in the end. My husband (who is cut) was strongly for having him circumcised but could never provide any good reasons as to why. He did jokingly say that he thought women would be repelled by an uncut penis (you know, once our son is old enough to be sexually active) but I tried telling him that by the time he's that age women won't think twice about an uncut penis because so many parents are choosing to not circumcise right now that intact men will be commonplace. He pretty much ignored me.

My husband and I agree on 95% of things but this isn't one of them. If we have another little boy I'm sure he'll want him circumcised too but I'm going to have to put my foot down. Unfortunately this isn't something you can reach a compromise on so I'll pretty much have to ignore my husband's wishes in favor of keeping our son intact. He won't be all that upset but he won't be happy about it (we've already discussed how he would feel if any of this were to happen in the future). He'll get over it =)

I come from the Uk where circumcision is really only done for medical reasons so for me it's very strange to hear about boys being circumcised just because, when there's no medical problem needing a circumcision. For me it's like taking out the appendix just in case it might get infected later, or taking out the spleen in case it ruptures in his 20s. A healthy and functioning body part doesn't need removing if it's working just fine. I guess it's easy for me to feel this way because in my country it's almost unheard of to just circumcise because of preference or cosmetic reasons. I wonder if I'd feel differently if I was American? Maybe I would.
A lot of women on this site justify it by saying "Oh but it's cleaner and leads to less infectioins" but I can't buy into that because well.... the proof is all around me. Millions of british boys and men are living healthily with their foreskins that they were born with. No amount of people telling me otherwise will change what I know and see all around me.
I believe it's not the foreskin that causes infections but rather poor management of the foreskin. Many intact American boys are taught to force the skin back and clean it roughly when gentle washing with water is enough. The forcable washing tears the delicate skin leaving it open to infections. Another sad fact is that many doctors in the USA are firm believers that circumcision is best so what chance to parents have when the health professionals they trust are as ill informed as they are?

this. It's nobody's business but yours and your SO's.

Our boys ARE circ'd. We did it for many reasons.

American Academy of Pediatrics now say that benefits DO outweigh the risks- however they don't necessarily recommend for or against

Not true, we are from the uk too and like I said for my first we ask if he could be done, the midewife helped us finding a doc closed to where we lived. two months later he was circumsied

Of course there are people who have it done for non medical reasons in the UK but in general it is very rare unless there are medical or religious reasons. It's so rare here that not every midwife and doctor will organise it where-as in the US it's almost assumed that boys will be circumcised and so doctors and nurses are prepared for the parents to ask for it. Here in the UK you would be in a minority but yes of course it does still happen. My point was as it's so rare here it's easy for me to to be anti circumcision and I wonder if I would be so anti circ if I were American. Probably not as where you live and what you're used to sways your opinion a lot.
