bedwetting

My 5 1/2 year old still has to wear overnight pull ups to bed. I don't know how to help her stop wetting the bed. She's been potty trained since she was 14 months and was staying dry at night from about 18 months until she was 3. I don't give her anything to drink after dinner, about 6:30pm. I tried corn silk which is supposed to help but there wasn't a difference so I stopped that. She has had frequent bladder and kidney infections but all the scans they have done have came back normal. I know she gets embarrassed by it especially because her little brother doesn't have to wear pull ups to wet and rarely wets the bed. Any suggestions?

Sometimes milk causes bladder issues in children. It could also just be that she's a heavy sleeper, my daughter wet the bed regularly until she was 10 due to being a deep sleeper. I used to wake her up about 3 or 4 hours into the night and have her use the bathroom.

She is a very deep sleeper. I have tried to wake her up to go to the bathroom, I can stand her up and she still won't wake up. She wakes up for her alarm clock for school though, maybe ill set it for twice a night as well.

I had the same problem. I was born with a small bladder and bad kidneys I forever stayed with bladder and kidney infections and I smurf you not I peed the bed til I was almost 11. It is beyond embarrassing so just try to keep that in mind when you deal with this because you dont want to make her feel worse about this then she already does. From what my doctor told my mother the biggest part of why I continued to wet the bed for so long was because of the constant bladder/kidney infections the other part was that I was also a heavy sleeper. So just try to get her up a few times during the night to have her use the bathroom and also take steps to prevent bladder/kidney infections by giving her water or cranberry juice over other things. Also I read somewhere that red koolaid can give little girls bladder infections so you may want to avoid that.

Often times if a baby or child has been sleeping dry for a while then starts bed wetting at a later age it is from stress. In extreme cases It can be a sign the child is being molested. It can also be a child upset about things like a divorce or things like that.

I don't know what is the case for you and it might not be any of the type of things I listed. But if you think that a stressor might be the cause I think you should talk with her pediatrician

There are/were a lot of stressful things in our family. Her father was in and out of her life for the first 3 years, seeing her 2 or 3 times a year but now hasn't been around for nearly 2 years. We just moved from a small town of 1000 people to Spokane Washington about a month ago. She witnessed domestic violence as an infant/toddler. She's been through a lot but now that we've moved we are away from a lot of the people that were putting stress on our family. Positive changes are coming our way and hopefully the bedwetting will start decreasing

I don't make her feel bad for wetting the bed. I was a bedwetter myself, genetics maybe? In all honesty, the last time I wet the bed was when I was pregnant (18 ). Embarrassing! But I used to have dreams that I got out of bed, walked to the bathroom and sat on the toilet. I would wake up when I realized I couldn't hear it hitting the water in the toilet.
*ETA she doesn't get koolaid often, mostly milk and 100% juices.

I don't know a whole lot about this but it happened to my brother when we were young. We had a good family life and then my mom started using drugs... it was nothing we were use to at all!

My parents split up right away but it was a while until we had a home and things got settled. I remember my little brother was about 5 and started bed wetting. I was 11 and had to take care of him, because my mom was on drugs and my dad was living in a car trying to make money to get us a home.

The when we got a place we all had to shear a room and sleep on the floor together for a while. The wetting continued... I think it went on for him until he adjusted to the new life and things settled. Maybe a year?

I am glad you are getting into a better life but maybe talk with her Pediatritan to see what else can be done. You want to do everything to help her not remember this stressfull time in her life, KWIM?

Also I am so glad you are not in a domestic violence situation any more! That is good for you, but that stuff can really affect some tots. Especially if they get to the point of saying things like “don’t be mean to my mommy” ect… So if she was in situations like that then she could have a little anxiety  So good job at moving on away from that and doing what is best for you two! I know it is hard for you to leave also! but you are doing the very best thing for her and yourself! Good job!

I didnt mean to imply that you would intentionally make her feel bad about it. For me I know when I went through this just what should have been harmless comments about the bed wetting would make me feel like smurf or just the way my mom/mamal would look at me. I remember when I was about 7 and we went back home and I had an accident in my mamal Roger's guest bedroom and she made some little comment and for a week I wouldnt even go into the same room as her because I felt that bad about it. And your right there is a possibility that she could be more pron to bed wetting at a later age because you wet the bed at a later age as well. I wouldnt become to focused on it though because the more you focus on it the more you make it into an issue KWIM? Just tell her that its ok when she has an accident and try to wake her up at night a few times and eventually it will stop but in the mean time you dont want her to stress herself out about having accidents or become so embarrassed about it that she tries to hide it from you.

My ex's son is 9 and still pees the bed. When we lived together I would make him, and I mean MAKE him wake up and go to the bathroom since he wouldn't get up on his own. You may just have to keep waking her up at night and making her go, maybe eventually she will wake herself up and go.
