Oatmeal vs. Rice

posted 11th Nov
I have heard that baby oatmeal is more nutritional that the rice cereal... But I was looking at the nutritional info on the both of them and it looks as if they are both basically exactly the same?

Rice cereal always made my daughter constipated so we used the oatmeal and never had a problem.

My DD enjoyed oatmeal. She absolutely would not eat the rice cereal.

I was planning on giving my daughter the oatmeal because from what I had heard the rice was basically just empty calories where as the oatmeal was not. I also heard that some people had problems with the constipation as well. So I was just curious about it!

Is one really more nutritious than the other? That was my question.

I tried oatmeal first, and her belly was making noises and she was fussy, and she had flakes of oatmeal in her diaper stuck to her butt, and her butt was super red, but its probably just her.. my grandmother said the rice is easier on their stomachs. I haven't had an issue with constipation, although her poop was like water before and now its a lil thicker

No, they are both pretty much empty calories... from what my daughter's dietitian said.

I mean I guess you could make your own oatmeal and it would be more nutritious than the boxed cereal. Depending on the oats you buy and such.

Oatmeal Cereal
Ingredients:
1/4 cup of ground oats (do NOT use instant or Quick Cook), ground in blender or food processor
3/4 cup - 1 cup water
Directions:
1. Bring liquid to boil in saucepan. Add the oatmeal powder while stirring constantly.
2. Simmer for 10 minutes, whisking constantly until cooked.
3. Mix in formula or breast milk and fruits if desired and serve warm.
