Maternity Leave

posted 11th Nov
What are you ladies doing for money for maternity leave? I will have some pto but only about 2 weeks. With bills plus new stuff for baby and Christmas coming up I am trying to figure out how we will make it on just my boyfriends income during the 6-8 weeks I have off :/ Really starting to stress. Just wanted some opinions.

Budget and pay extra on bills before you take your leave. Then when baby arrives, just live tightly.

No. Unemployment does not cover maternity leave

Thats what I am trying to do. I guess the only plus side is tax time is right around the corner. Just seems like everything is happening so fast. Starting to have a major last minute meltdown that I definetly dont need! :/

Is that only in the US? It does in Canada. It also covers parental leave.

Whet does your husband work that he got 5 weeks paid!?! My husband gets one week paid and up to three unpaid after that, and we thought THAT was good.

Well, I mean, he had to use his PTO, sorry that was missleading, lol. He works at a hospital.

Oh I see. Lol That makes sense. My husband is a software engineer he works on the mother board at fidelity investments so he has a great job with really good benefits, but 5 weeks paid was blowing my mind! Lol

I saved my tax money and saved what I could out of each check. I got no PTO when I went on maternity leave.

another reason I am grateful, especially today on Rememberence Day in Canada honoring those who have fought for our freedoms that I live in Canada   52 weeks off of work with pay   55% of what I would normally make plus my work tops me up to 84% for 6 months as well... I love this country!!

Yeah Canada is way better with maternity leave...here in the US, we get 6 weeks (8 if it's a c-section) with disability pay which is like 60% of what you normally make. But of course there's a cap on that so what I get will not be close to 60% of what I normally make, and hubby just lost his job and is on unemployment (which also is about half what he normally makes), so we're moving in with my in-laws for the time being.
