Funeral outside funeral home?

posted 11th Nov
I have a question about funerals and I wasn't sure where I put it. My grandfather is dying and he was writing out his will before taking it to the notary's office. He said that he wants to be cremated and then have the ashes spread over a public park where he grew up. He is aethiest so he doesn't want any priests or ministers or anything like that.

Is that possible? Will the funeral home release his ashes to us once he's cremated? With my great-grandmother I'm not sure how it went but I know my family had her ashes and took it to another country to scatter them where she wanted. I'm just not sure if they will let us do our own funeral without any help from them? TIA

You can request to have him creamated & just say you don't want a funeral. They will give you a temporary container for them so you don't have to buy a urn. Fyi it is illegal to scatter ashes on public propery so be careful

They can't force you to have priests and what not.

We already called the owner of the parc and she said it was fine. We're in Canada so idk if the laws are the same about that here.

Pretty much everyone who's died in my family didn't want a funeral service. We just picked up the ashes and spread them where they wanted to be spread. So much better that way.

Sorry to hear about your Grandfather, OP

Can one scatter the ashes of the deceased?

In Quebec there is no law governing the method of disposal of the ashes of a deceased person. Consequently this can be done anywhere, in accordance with the wishes of the deceased or the family, except where contrary to local by-laws.

Go to that website for any questions you have regarding cremations in Quebec.
