Did anyone else have this problem?

So first off: hello everyone, I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you.
My name is Cassie, I'm 26, and although I'm not technically trying to conceive my guess is that my issue would best fall under this category.
Roughly three weeks ago I realized my appetite had changed. My boyfriend just looked at me and asked if I was pregnant, I told him no. He then told me very seriously that I should take a test. Shockingly, it came up positive.
Naturally, I tested again after a week since I wasn't entirely sure and I got yet another positive. Still unsure, I tested a couple more times over the last week. Four tests, four different days, all positive.
Over the last couple weeks I've even noticed a few changes. Headaches, dizziness (not quite nausea, but close), sore pelvis, EXTREME fatigue, mood swings, an the boyfriend had been commenting on me feeling tighter down there when we would be...um...intimate (tmi I know). My worry was for the past few weeks my period was way out of balance. I've always been pretty irregular but two four day cycles in two weeks (9/25-9/28 and 10/8-10/11) and then consistent spotting from the 17th on had me concerned. I went in to see a doctor today and the urine sample they collected tested as negative.
My doctor said at this point he didn't doubt I was pregnant but I'm likely not pregnant anymore, and suggested routes to go regarding my period cycles (though he did say that it would be best for me to talk with an obgyn since he wasn't a specialist about that. He also suggested I should wait a week and test again before I saw a family practitioner if I still wasn't sure and I agreed I would.
Well I didn't wait a week, I tested again this afternoon (I seriously did not believe what I saw on that test) and sure enough, it came out positive.
My question is what could have possibly affected that test? And how could I have gotten a negative and then another positive that same afternoon? And what could possibly be the cause of the bleeding? Anyone else been there? Tested positive at home and then negative by a doctor's test? What was your ultimate outcome? Any advice or input would be helpful. Thanks!

I'm no doctor and have never had an experience related to this... but I've heard that false negatives are way more common than false positives. I would go to an OB/GYN or midwife and ask for a blood test to check HCG levels. Good luck, hope you get the results you want!

Well dear I can't really give you any advice, you always have that chance of spotting after sex due to your cervix and uterus swelling and increased blood flow.. also could be implantation where the baby is nestling down really good in your uterus. I mean there honestly could be a million and one things that causes bleeding/spotting. But I would seriously be calling your doc back and just be honest and be like I tested again and got a postive I'm going batty can you please set me up with an ultrasound so I can get a answer as to what's going on here as far as you not wanting to be lead on with excitement for a baby or prepare for the worst. Im sure if you explain it to the doc.he will more then likely give you one. Also the tightness your SO is felling is just normal swelling that happens with pregnancy it gets a WHOLE lot worse trust me mine looks like a double cheeseburger right now! Goodluck dear hope everything works out for you!

Also false negatives are way common.. false positives are super super super rare! And if you are early on in pregnancy if you drink a lot of liquid or have peed frequently before testing you can dilute your urine causing it to read negative that is why on a pregnancy test box use first morning urine or wait and test 4/5 hours after peeing last to let the hcg build up in your pee.

I've had it happen to me. I was pregnant with my now 5 year old. I had taken two home tests, both positive. I went to the ER cuz I was really sick (not pregnancy related) and they took a test cuz the doc felt my stomach and asked if I could be preggo. So their test (urine) came back negative. He told me to go buy another of the test I had taken before and call him with the results. It wasn't even FMU when I took the third and fourth home test and both of them were positive. I called him and told him the results. He said it was odd because their tests are sensitive. So yea their test could definitely be wrong.

Often, doctor's surgeries don't stock tests that are sensitive enough to pick up early pregnancy. The home tests you have taken are probably able to measure from 15-50 MIU/ml but the ones doctors use are usually 100MIU/ml and therefore wouldn't pick up the amount of hormone you have. If you're still concerned and want to be certain: go back in, explain that you have yet another positive test and ask to have a quantitative blood test. That'll tell you exactly how much of the pregnancy hormone is currently in your system
