A Fond du Lac County judge has sentenced 19-year-old Carly Ottery to one year in jail for the traffic crash that took the lives of three of her high school friends.

Circuit Court Judge Dale English sentenced Ottery to one year in jail with work release privileges, six years probation and community service.

Comments in support of the girls who were killed and in support of Ottery lasted about 6 hours during the sentencing hearing that began at 9 a.m. today.

More than 200 people packed the Fond du Lac County courtroom waiting to hear the sentence handed down for Ottery.

The charges carried a maximum sentence of around 30 years in prison. The prosecutor in the case is requesting probation.
In issuing his decision, English noted that he prayed a lot in this case and doesn't believe that Ottery is a danger to the public.

Carly Ottery's family members took the stand this afternoon, asking the court for leniency for the 19-year-old.

"The passengers made the choice to get into the vehicle that evening," Ottery's aunt told the courtroom this afternoon.

"Carly is not a reckless individual, but a role model," said another family member.

But families of the three girls who were killed in the crash noted their daughters are never coming back and are the true victims in this case.

"The hardest part is going somewhere and knowing she is not going to be there," said Tim and Julainne Scannell who became empty-nesters with the loss of their youngest child, Caitlin, one of the three girls killed in the crash on Feb. 4.

"What shocks and pains me is people considering Carly a possible fourth victim. Really?, Tim Scannell said.

"Some people don't want consequences. Some people don't like consequences," he said.
"After the crash I lost my only daughter - my baby girl, " said Bonnie Berg, mother of Katie Berg, who was killed in the crash.

Bonnie described all the pictures they had of family events and now the final picture of her daughter, an elaborate ribbon "sister" from the funeral.

Mark Stahl, father of Sabrina Stahl, who was killed in the crash, said, "People say we're so strong. We're numb. We're still in shock."

Bonnie Berg stood at the podium with her husband and diasbled son with a framed picture, sobbing.

She told the courtroom how loving and caring for other people her daughter was.
She said her daughter babysat and worked at Piggly Wiggly in the bakery.

While the statement were being given, Carly Ottery looked down at the defense table.
The hearing for Carly Ottery, 19, began at 9 a.m. before Fond d Lac County Circuit Court Judge Dale English.
Ottery has pleaded no contest to charges of negligent homicide in the Feb. 4 crash that killed three Campbellsport High School girls and injured Ottery and five others in the car.
The courtroom is so packed, media representatives are seated in the jury box.

in that case yeah she should have gotten even more jail. She murdered 3 people!!!

Sounds very negligent. She should have gotten much longer than 1 year.

This is very true too. It could have been any of them driving.

no but like i told my mom when your the driver you are in control no one else you...and then let her get huber is a joke

So the other three girls died and she live. They were all in te same car?

I think it's fair. When you take the wheel you are responsible for the people in that car and for following traffic laws. I think it is a fair Punishment cause all of those girls stayed in the car and anyone of them could have been the one driving and done the same thing. It was a bad judgement call to mess around with your friends while driving. I'm sure she's remorseful. She will probably hate herself for what she did for the rest of her life which is worse than any jail time could ever be.

That's what I'm thinking, a bunch of dumb kids wanting to prove how bad ass they are. I'm sure she didn't force them in the car and they all knew what she was going to try and do. It's a horrible thing but I think the ruling was as fair as they could make it.

Was this the one where thry died because they weren't wearing seatbelts and she was.

Only one year...how awful.
