Paranoid mama bear?!

(So sad to post in here and not in infants!)

We just took our daughters to the doctor, eldest is almost 5, youngest is 18 months old. Eldest goes to school, youngest stays home with me.

Sophia (eldest) has a bit of a cough, says her throat hurts, bit of fever, head hurts, and some sneezing. Doc says it's just a cold. (I have same symptoms, I thought it was worse but with my asthma anything turns into bronchitis)

Gianna (youngest) has been acting more sassy then her usual self, but she's honestly just such a ball of fire all of the time I just assumed it was teething. Then we (yesterday) notice white spots and coating on her tongue. And a big red spot (that looks kind of.. raw?!) on her chin and a few around that..

Doc looks at her and says she has a virus on her tongue, doesn't give any meds. Just tells us some soups to feed her, and yogurt, and yeah, that's it. I ask him what exactly kind of virus, he gives me a scientific term that I can not remember. I honestly was just hoping it was something I could come home and google.  

Now, I got a note home from Sophia's school, saying that there has been Coxsackie virusinfection being spread around. I don't remember until last minute, so my husband runs back and mentions it to the doctor. He says "Hm, well it could be the start of that, but she's not contagious at this point;for now she's all good".

I mean, I know I am probably just being a paranoid mama bear. But would you go somewhere else? Or just come back in two weeks as he asked and take it from there? Wait it out and see if it spreads or if her behavior changes?

She has hand, foot and mouth. I was so confused by the scientific name. It is usually not a big deal. It is very common. However, if you are not happy with doc then get a second opinion.

I always thought coxsackie was strep. Guess ive been wrong this whole time. Poor baby.

It was weird. First he said it's just a virus of the tongue, then when my husband mentioned the other virus he was like "Oh, it could be the start of that, but she isn't contagious, come back in a week or two." He didn't seem very concerned. I just didn't know if I should be!

Hearing it's common helps. Thank you.

Oh, I am confused on all of this so you could very well be right. I am just trying to figure out basically what exactly she has. But I guess it's bad of me to look too much into it. He said virus on the tongue and that she is OK. I just wanted a name and explanation, ya know?!

I think I will make an appointment in one week instead of waiting until two weeks. Thanks for the input!

My neighbors girls have had it and a few other families I know. It can really go rapid in a school setting. It is just one of those things. Not serious, but not to be taken lightly as it can spread to other people, even to you.

That's the odd thing. My eldest daughter who is IN school doesn't have it, but my youngest does. My eldest could've carried it over to my youngest, ya think??

And it's odd because on the notice they sent home they said it's super contagious, but when the doctor said that it might be the start of it, he made a point to say she is not contagious at this moment in time.

So it's all around just confusing...

HF&M is contagious during the first week. So....not sure why he said that? Anyway, there is no treatment for this since it's viral. Just the same rule of thumb with any illness; lots of fluids and rest   And I would think she is the one that got it because she is youngest and her immune system isn't as good as Sophia's. Poor babies and poor Momma!

Immune system thing makes great sense. Also didn't think of the fact that I always bring Gianna to pick up and drop off and she always plays with the kids on the playground, so she's exposed as well unfortunately.

Honestly Erica it's hard seeing them sick but it's good to expose them so that when they do start school they aren't sick every week. Obvi Squishy is in childcare but this baby was so sick the first year of his life. He's had fifth disease to roseola to swine flu (and many more). But now he hardly ever gets sick. So it's hard at the time but it def pays off.

Yeah, that's true. G has had Roseola, croup, random colds, and now this. With Sophia she only ever had her ear infection/fever issues so it's a whole new ball game for me! Thanks boo.
