Explaining holidays

posted 9th Nov
How in the hell do you teach a 3 year old that holidays don't last forever?

For example - he still asks to go trick or treating and constantly asks for candy. He thinks that every time he goes to the store, he gets something new for his birthday that was a week ago.

I've tried explaining to him that Halloween is only one night a year and we have to wait until the next one, but he still asks. I'm just not sure how to go about this and stop letting him down. I'm worried what's going to happen for Christmas when he's getting gifts from so many people, but only on one day.

I'm still hearing about Halloween. I told DD that now we are going to celebrate Thanksgiving. I just keep reminding her when she brings in up.

Do you have a play calendar? He is old enough to learn the days of the week. You can talk about the name of the month too. Having a calendar can help explain when a special day is coming and when it has passed. Time is a tricky concept and children experience it very differently than adults but the more he knows the better able he will be to understand that Halloween has passed and Christmas is coming.

Good thing there's always another holiday coming up. It's just kind of annoying and I feel bad that I have to tell him there is no more Halloween because he's finally getting into the spirit of holidays.

That's a good idea. I will have to print one out or something. We can decorate the "special" day with stickers and stuff so he has something to look forward to.

Im still hearing about Halloween lol but seriously a couple days after Halloween my son said "its Christmas time!" I was like omfg..

Best thing so I have learned... a calendar. Explain the holiday, what day it is. Also, explain your holiday scheduling, where youre going, what youre doing, who youre going to see. That kinda eliminates the hubub, most of it anyway. They are question machines regardless. We get a calendar just for the kids room, we got one with his high five(highlights) magazine, came with stickers specifically for the holidays.

My son keeps asking what his dad and I are going to be for Halloween, I just keep telling him it's over til next year bud, or answer him well next year we might be this or that. He still asks everyday though! So I keep reminding him that the snow is coming and it will soon be Christmas.

My daughter is 3 and it's just now setting in that halloween is over. She got to wear her costume several times for different things but as soon as halloween was over, we put the costume away and I just kept reminding her that it's done.

I tell my three year old that Halloween won't be until Next year but Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up. She asks about Halloween all year, and she asks about Christmas all year. Her birthday was 4 months ago and she is asking when it is going to be again. Three year old's don't under stand the concept of time.
