Well just to chime in. Im black (dont know if yall can tell that or not  ) Black parents have a tendency to be harder on their kids to make them more tough I suppose. As a kid growing up, I wasnt whupped a lot because by 4 years old I knew what my mama expected of me. As long as I said "yes ma'am", "no ma'am" and had good grades. I was golden.

Thinking about it, I live in a mostly black community and I dont know one family that doesnt whup their kids. Not whupping your kids around here, you'd get looked at crazy.

i wanted to smack that women not only is she bad but her remark makes all black moms look bad..im not black btw but i can see it now someone watching the show goes out and sees a black mom with her kids in there mind there going to think oh my god she beats her kids cause thats how all black kids are raised...and then her saying it was disapline yes i got spanked as a kid but only one or two quick ones that was it not for no damn 35 mins..,if she keeps doing this one day her daughter is going to snap...i know this cause after my dad left my mom when i was about 8 she got bad she was very mental and physcal abusive that one day when i was 15-16 i snapped..grabed a knife grabed her throat slammed her agaisnt the wall and told her if she ever touched me again i would kill her...i know i shouldnt have done that but at that time i felt backed up agaisnt the wall and nothing else was working

Did you read the whole thread? The woman who sparked this question beats her daughter.( naked) with a belt until she's out of breath. That is definitely abuse.

a person can only be pushed so far and conselling doesnt help if the cycle keeps happing

It seems like the word spanking is really subjective.
In my family, any type of physical discipline, no matter if it was a slight tap on the butt, or a strike with a belt, was called anything from spanking to getting your ass beat.
