I'm feeding my children a horrible diet? WDYT?

posted 8th Nov
I took DD and DS to the doctor a little over a week ago.
DS is small, at 43rd percentile for height and 29th for weight. DD is big, at 90th percentile for height and over the 97th for weight.
I saw the Nurse Practitioner for the first time, and she had a lot to say about my kids weights. She started off by telling me that I was setting DD up for a lifetime of obesity, and that she would not be overweight like this if I was feeding her properly. She is fed on demand, about 30oz of formula per day, plus one serving of fruits, one of veggies and 1/2 a serving of diced fresh slaughter meats.

The nurse told asked if I planned to feed DD the same diet as DS. I said yes, I would, once she was able. I said I would continue to feed on demand, ith healthy options as "extra" food.
She then told me to write down what my son ate every day for a week, even after I said he didn't eat much because he had been in feeding therapy for over a year and was just now showing large improvements. When I showed her the food chart she said to me;
"The fact that Jonas is so slender appears to be nothing but luck and genetics. If you feed Morgan like this, you will see a weight problem. You are causing fat cells to form, and they will never disappear. The percentage of canned foods you're letting your child eat is extremely high- and unless you change it, you are risking a life time of health problems."

Is this really that horrible!? I thought it sounded decent as I was writing it. After what she said I was glad I didn't write in that he ate a piece of Halloween candy on two of the days. Dang.

She mentioned he had eating problems. I think the nurse is nuts.

That's what I thought. He went through feeding therapy just to get to this point. I don't think it was the quantity, but the quality.

Ehh, who cares what that nurse said.

Your son is obviously a picky eater...as long as he is eating something, isn't all that matters ?

It sounds decent. If I wrote down what my daughter ate, you would have a heart attack. All she asks for is candy and chicken nuggets, I get so sick of her askIng for crap that I tell her to eat the whole box. My kid is 4 and weighs like 33lbs. She looks healthy. You sound like a good mom.

I think the only problem is what you stated, not eating enough. It seems mostly healthy to me though.

No that diet is not terrible. Is there any way you could add more legumes? Beans, nuts etc. and more fresh veggies. they have good fats to help your son. Is he on any supplements to make up for he has a hard time with.
And the fact that she said its was luck with genetics that he was slender is bullsmurf considering he is in dietary therapy. She knows he has a hard time with food and is saying that's somehow "lucky". What an idiot. She should have been more concerned with your son's situation than your daughter. And your daughter being in a high percentile for her weight and height is a GOOD thing, and considering your son's troubles i would see her growth as a victory. Keep doing what your doing, mama.

Did you see the nurse twice? She told you to keep a food journal for a week. Did you see her after that, or you just made this list off the top of your head during your first visit with her?

Her problem stems more than my 10 month old DD is over the 97th for weight, and I said I planned to feed her basically the same way- increasing fruits and veggies as needed, since she seems to have a much healthier appetite.
