If it were cheaper, they would. Which I don't understand how they're not at least equal. They pay the workers in china less but then you have shipping. They pay workers here more, but no shipping (across seas).???

Yes, they're hard to find too.

They pay Chinese factory workers about $0.45 per hour. Our federal minimum wage is $7.25. That means we're paying them just 6% of what we pay our own workers. Yes, there is shipping and there are tariffs, but with a pay gap that large, it's definitely cheaper to have China make stuff.

Not to mention there are lots of union jobs that pay WAY more than minimum wage.

I buy local, first. Then I try to stick with other things Made in Canada... But, living in a small town, all we have is walmart, zellers and Canadian tire... Most of the stuff they supply has been made in China.

I see. I wasn't sure how it worked. Seems we're stuck til we figure out something cheaper here.

I would grab the cheaper one.

My s/o would gladly hand over extra money for an American-made product. He doesn't have this political reasoning for it, he just thinks Americans make better stuff.

They also manipulate their currency to keep their prices artificially low, which gives them an edge.

I think Romney actually brought it up in one of the debates, how he wanted to make sure they were playing fair, which would help us compete a little better.

We try to buy American made whenever possible. It's becoming harder and harder to find unfortunately. If our bank acct is drained though, we do buy the cheaper item.

I'd pay more for the American made product. Now when it comes to vehicles, I like my foreign, well made vehicles that give me minimal mechanical issues.
