civil war map and electoral map similar?

It seems the civil war divide is similar to the electoral map. Im not an expert in history so does anyone know why?? This map of civil war union and confederate states is almost identical to last nights election results.

Blue-union states
Red-confederate states

Yeah, they look similar.

Conservatives are still conservatives and progressives are still progressives. Different regions have different values and they carry over to social issues. The same justification for slavery - the Bible says such and such and the federal government shouldn't tell the states it's illegal - is now used for issues like marriage equality.

I've spotted at least 4 states that switched side. I don't think it's similar. N prolly bc each generation passes knowledge to the next.... If ur parents are democrat n were brought up like that ur more likely to be/ identify democratic. If ur a rebel flag household ur kids may just have one in their house, etc.
