Storing Breastmilk

posted 8th Nov
Okay, so I'm a noob here, bare with me.

Say you start expressing milk before the baby gets here. Could you freeze it and store it for later? Or should you not let yourself, like, get passed the colostrum stage because you can't store that.... Or something. I don't know, lol.
I just really want to breastfeed this time and I want to be as prepared as humanly and boobily possible.

I *think* you would only get colostrum anyway until the baby is born. Pumping can always send u into early labour so be careful!!

If you really want to breastfeed then the best thing to do is just have baby on the boob as often as it wants and to drink heaps of water and pump after feeding

You would just get colostrum if you pumped now. Your body doesn't know to produce milk until after you deliver. Nipple stimulation *could* start labour, but not unless you're body is already prepared for it...I used to squeeze out colostrum all the time just for fun (weird, I know) and it never put me into labour...I think you would have to sit there for a long time rubbing and squeezing your nips for that to happen. Best thing to do is wait until the baby comes, and nurse nurse nurse...and eat and drink lots of water....and don't forget to continue taking your prenatals!

Milk doesnt come in until after the baby is born and the placenta detaches which releases the hormone to start up milk production. Pumping can also cause early labor so dont do it. Only about 5% of women truly have supply issues so chances are you will be fine. Get baby on the breast as soon as possible after birth. Within the first hour is ideal when baby is most alert. I have my second on the breast within 20 minutes of birth. No bottles/pacis or anything for 4-6 weeks. Nurse as often as the baby wants which for the first few weeks is about 24/7.

I wouldn't pump any before baby is born.
But with breastmilk, I store mine in the freezer in lansinoh breastmilk bags.

Im one of that small percent with supply issues. Im glad I didnt start pumping early (or trying to) cause I was able to return the unopened pump and buy formula. That's how I look at it. You dont wanna waste all that money on a pump you wont use.
