I guess not. The dept of labor itself said it doesnt make the call on ft/pt hours, its usually left up to the employer what they want it to be. But like the Nuge said, maybe states make a call on what a minimum should be for ft. That I havent had a chance to look up yet.

Wow seems odd. Here if you're hired FT you're contracted for 40 hours and your employer legally has to give you 40 hours.

I tried looking it up about states and from what I saw, it said the same thing about employers making those decisions.

I dont know how that works legally, but Ive had a couple places say I would get ft hours, then after a while they start chipping away at them.

Ive read a lot of posts from you tho, and you make Australia sound awfully nice!

Sounds to me what we call casual work here .... your employer can give you as many or few hours as they want and you agree to the shifts on a day by day basis. Here employers have to have a certain % of contracted permanent staff to casual staff.

Thank you   we have our fair share of issues here and things are going to get tough if Gillard and her carbon/mining tax keeps up.

Thats an interesting concept tho! I wonder if they could implement something like that here. My guess would be a lot of people probably wont like it... :/

Welcome! Haha I have seen people mention that before, how does that work?

The carbon tax works basically by the government taxing big business and mine sites on the amount of carbon footprint and emissions they create. Those prices are then trickled by the companies (naturally) down the consumers ... my electricity bill has nearly doubled in the last 3 months and gas prices are set to sky rocket because of it.
Don't get me wrong I uunderstand the importance of the environment, but when we're the only country in the world to actually bring this smurf in its hardly helping the environment.
All this bullsmurf on top of Gillard refusing to take Japan for the world court for illegally poaching in our waters ... when she claims to be all for the environment ... really pissed me off.

I'm in the 53%. I always have. I do have an interest where my tax dollars are going.

One is a part-time job, the other is a casual position. I'm a student, so I pay for student health insurance, but I also have private insurance. My family is paying over 20% (closer to 1/3) for private insurance that is basically crap.

I could easily get a full-time in my field, but being in school, it is hard to work full-time and juggle the brutal day-to-day work Nursing school demands.

As for the link...interesting. I've heard the opposite. Depends on the study, I guess.
