The primary responsibility of the federal government should be to protect its citizens, not to support them financially. Those "silly toys" gave way to life saving technology used every single day. Are you aware that the flight simulation software used by F-16 pilots has given way to a drilling simulation software that oil companies can use to train their employees so instances like Deepwater Horizon do not happen again? That technology alone created an accessible way for employees to maintain their training in real time in a cost effective manner. Military technology can and is used in a variety of tools that improve health, safety, and quality of life.

Obamacare defines FT work as 30 hrs/wk. This is going to be VERY painful. Most employers were planning on having people work PT at 39 hours per week to avoid paying for benefits and now they have to cut those needed hours to 29.
I told me flaming liberal dad about how FT has been redefined and he said, "wow! that is GREAT for the employees who will now get coverage." He just doesnt get it!

Any place I have ever worked defined FT as being over 30 hours...I dont understand how that is a new thing being redefined under Obamacare? Especially with retail jobs. Thats why they hire a whole bunch of people and keep their hours under 30 hours. To avoid being forced to provide benefits. This is nothing new. Lol

sure it is new. Overtime kicks in after 40 hours as 40 is full time. i dont believe there is an offical defnition (perhaps states define it), but as a small business, i'd consider my employees FT if they worked 40 or more.

Does anyone know how it's going to work with sub-contractors? That is technically what DH is. I'm assuming well have to buy private insurance. Or do the programs like we get now count? Idk..,

That's what DH gets as a sub contractor. He's not required to carry even accidental type insurance because DH is "self-employed" and is considered a business expense?

Ok. I tried looking it up because on thinking on it more, I believe one place considered FT as being over 35 hours. The dept of labor said it doesnt classify pt/ft and said its determined by employer generally. It didnt say much more than that. Maybe some states have some clarification like you said. Sorry!

The company I worked for up until recently was 100% owner/operator, minus the office staff. We did offer various types of insurance that they could get through us at a lower rate, but we paid no taxes on them or their equipment. I see quite a few companies going in a similar direction in order to turn some type of profit.

The amount of people I know getting stupid degrees is horrific and then they bitch and moan about not wanting to get a job they believe isn't worthy of them when they graduate. Seriously how many jobs do people think there are in Art History or Documentary Journalism?
I'm going back to school online next year to do creative writing not to get me a job but because I want to do it. I already have a degree in nursing and a career in IT, I would never have been allowed to study anything straight out of school that didn't have a guaranteed career at the end.

30 hours? That's not even considered part time here, to be classified as part time you have to be 32 - 40 hours and full time is 40+ (though some business have it at 3 .

I know, its crazy. But for most places I worked for, in order to qualify for benefits, you have to be working at least 30 hours a week. Thats why many retail jobs constantly mess with peoples hours to keep them under that so they wont qualify. Its not a new practice at all, but may happen more often.

And a lot of places will cut you off at 40 hours, because then you will hit overtime pay, and they dont like to pay that. Again, with retail they will send you home once you hit 39 or 40 hours on the dot.

So in general 30 is considered the minimum for ft hours and it goes up to 40. Then once you hit 40, youre working on overtime. And some, maybe most places have to pay time and a half for OT. My mom used to work as a CNA tho, and they were pretty good with giving overtime sometimes.
