Social Security for my son since hes dad isn't around.????

posted 7th Nov
So my fiance passed away before our son was born and I'm just wondering if there is anyway i can get financial help besides welfare, already tried that and im currently in college. Welfare wanted me to work 160 hours for $160 and I have no time as it is. I'm at school from 8- 1 then i have my externship at a office from 2-5 or 6pm. Every day of the week. Does anyone know how or if I can get SSI for my son or a way to get help since his dad is passed away and i have no income :/

My uncle died & my cousin will get a check until she's 18. But he paid a lot into SS before dying.

he worked right out of highschool but didn't put enough SS money into it. If we would have been married i think the lady said my son could draw it off me since i did put money in with a previous job.

Doesnt hurt to try. I always heard if a parent dies before a child reaches age they can get some kind of benefits.

My daughter's father passed away before she was born. She gets a decent amount each month and got 6 months back pay for it as I did not apply til she was past the age of 2. I would try and do that. It was really easy for me to do. You might have to get a legal DNA test done because he passed away before your child was born. It was really fast for me. I applied on a Friday and had the 6 months back pay in my account on Friday.

I am very sorry for your families loss.

I dont know how it works if the baby is not born yet, when my Husband died they asked me if the children were living in the home with the deceased wage-earner & being supported bu him when I was doing my intake. How much you will get depends on how much taxes he paid into system. We get a decent amount because my DH was in his 40's and had 24 years of tax-paying employment.

What you need to do.......is go to the SS office in person and meet with a caseworker. They will determine your eligibility status, any documentation you need, etc.

Survivors Benefits are not welfare, it is the deceased persons taxes that they payed into the system that go to any dependants if they have any, after their death.

It differs than welfare in that once approved, you will still get them even if you work, and you dont worry about caseworkers and your benefits being cut off.
