Oh I plan to HELP my child with college, but I also plan to teach her to be responsible enough to WANT to pay for it on her own. I'm not upset that I'm covering my own expenses. I'm GLAD I am. That way, I can be a real role model to my child, and tell them I did this on my own terms. That I sacrificed and worked hard to pay to do right by them.

My job as a parent is to teach my child responsibility, to teach them ethics, morals, and the value of a dollar. Not to cover her whole college expenses. After my child is a legal adult, she can help pay for her own education. Adults need to try and act like adults.

I see higher education as being just as important as food and water. That's the way I was bought up. There are loads of other ways to teach those attributes. Make her buy her own car...her on computer...her own laptop. That's enough to teach responsibilty of having to provide for yourself. College education is very important and should not be toyed with by saying "here's your chance to be an adult". I'm sorry you feel differently. If playing with your daughter's future is the way you chose to teach her responsibilty, That's your choice. Your opinion. Good for you.

My parents didn't play with my future. I graduate in a year, near the top of my class, with a degree in Early Childhood Education. And I did it myself.

Studies show when college is paid for by parents, or someone else, and the child doesn't have to work for it, that the child won't try as hard. They feel like it's paid for, guaranteed, so why worry? I'd rather her do it herself, and SO and I HELP her when needed, than to just tell her, yeah, we'll foot the whole bill for this.

She can live here, rent free, no bills, we'll give her transportation, anything she needs, to focus on her schooling. But we want her to do her BEST to pay for as much of it as she can on her own, with scholarships, grants, etc.

Good for you. I don't fit into that study as I try hard anyway. I guess since my education has been paid for by my parents my entire life basically, college was no change for me.   My son will never have to worry about tuition if I can help it.

Then we were simply raised with different ideals. My parents never let me think that ANYTHING was a guarantee, even school. So I learned to work hard to get where I want to go in life.
