How can you even say popular vote went to Romney when they are not even done calculating all the votes and BTW so far popular vote did not go to Romney.......even if the electoral votes didn’t matter Obama would have still won....as of right now 59,696,127 voted for Obama and 57,072,892 voted for Romney, you do the math.

No reason to be snarky. We had already established that the votes weren't all counted yet. I KNOW that Obama won popular vote.

OK so I have just Googled the American Presidential Election system and I don't know if I have got this right..... You guys all go out and cast individual votes but your individual votes don't actually count because it is this person representing your state that essentialy casts the vote that matters? So in theory a States actual citizens could vote say 58% Obama and this one person could say no our State vote goes to Romney, have I got that right?

No...I think they have to vote with the popular vote of that state...so if it was 58% Obama, the state would be voting for Obama.

in 2000 Bush did not win the popular vote but took office anyway. This has only happened in 4 elections. Obama clearly won the popular vote and the electoral vote...so even without the electoral vote he would still be president. However, without the electoral college we wouldnt have had to deal with 8 years of Bush.

Last night when the post was created, Romney WAS winning the popular vote... Now, clearly not.

Actually, it is. LEGALLY the representatives can vote any way they want to, but traditionally they will cast their votes in the direction that the state went. True story. I doubt they would decide to go the other way and piss their state off, bc that would mean no re-election for them.

At last glance, Romney won the popular vote.

The electoral college should not be abolished. ALL states should be able to split their electoral votes in the general election. Electoral votes should be by county.

It still works, it just needs tweaking according to population changes.
