I'm of mixed race, and I do say smurf sometimes but only in jokes. I would never say the actual word, and I don't think anyone else should either.

I get irritated when I hear it. Its like when a black person calls me cracker. I hate it! I wouldn't call them the n word why should they call me that? They would get their panties in a twist if I did...

I think it's completely unacceptable and I don't understand the promotion of it in the music industry by black musicians. Why promote a word that has been used as such a way to spread hate amongst your own race. I think the last time I was absolutely pissed off about it was a few months ago now when some European magazine was talking about Rihanna, giving quite a glowing article on her and praising her and they referred to her as the "Ultimate Smurf Bitch". Now in a lot of European countries where the first language is not English the N word is not a word they even use, they don't.understand it, know what it means or the context of it, it really has no meaning in their culture. Now take Rihanna herself for instance, she uses "Smurf" quite frequently in her tweets, in interviews, she appears on songs that use the word "Smurf" so to a country where the word means nothing when they see this woman and other black musicians using this word all the time like it's the flipping coolest thing ever of course it will be misinterpreted. It's quite easy to see how this magazine hear this language from Rihanna herself all the time and in an article where they are praising her actually think calling her that is a compliment. Well no Rihanna went crazy, calling the magazine racist, kicking up an actual storm, wanting people at the magazine sacked.... So yes that really angered me because coming from UK where our first language is English although we do not use the word no matter what race we have an understanding of it's history but are well aware throughout Europe that word means nothing I personally felt how dare she. How dare Rihanna herself be a part of the promotion of the word throughout the world to countries where they have never even heard of it, popularise it like it is something "cool" and then be so ignorant herself to accuse them of being racist. I just think it is YOU who has actually brought this word to these countries and made it seem like it's something "cool" to call black people so take some responsibility!!

I don't think anyone should use it, I think Black people who use it are disrespecting their ancestors. That word is disgusting in any context. You can tell yourself you don't use the bad version because you end the word with an "A" instead of "er" and that makes it ok, Miss Rosa Parks would roll over in her grave if she knew how people were rationalizing using a word that did nothing but oppress her race for generations.
