And I would vote Democrat either way. But I suppose it's possible that a lot of people base it as a race thing.

They know because you have to be registered to vote? And your ethnicity is part of your registration and basic individual information. In this case, being reported on the news was per polling outside the polling stations. It was reported in ways such as "White working class" "African American Voters" "Elderly voters"
