Milk Allergy
posted 6th Nov
I had my daughter at 34 weeks & 3 days. She stayed in the nicu for 10 days & 2 days after having her home we noticed she had blood in her stool. We took her to the er & the er doctors did an xray, tested her stool, tested some pumped breast milk & said my breast milk tested positive for blood so they thought that what was causing the problem. Well a few days later we took her to her pediatric doctor for a nicu followup & they weren't happy with what the blood in the stool so admitted her into the hospital. Again ran test & everything has came back fine so now they are thinking it's a milk allergy but they also want us to see a gi pedi just to be safe. Has any other parents experienced this in their preemie baby & if so did they eventually over come the allergy? Also what did your diet consist of after taking dairy out?

My daughter had blood in her stool starting around 4.5 months old. She was a premie coming 5.5 weeks early. Our pediatrician diagnosed the milk protein allergy right away. I was breastfeeding so I cut dairy, then soy. Still was no improvement. So we put her on Nutramigen formula and it resolved the symptoms almost immediately.
I don't know about growing out of it. I have read most kids grow out of the allergy by age 2. I think we will try milk at 1 year and see if she gets symptoms from it. For now though I am so happy we found the nutramigen and she is feeling better!
