If your child used sign language

posted 5th Nov
Do you think it affected them learning to talk? Either negatively or positively. Guess I'm talking to mamas who signed with their infants and toddlers, not necessarily deaf children.

Like, if your LO signed, did they learn words/start talking quickly? Or did they use mostly signs and not talk much?

My 15 month old signs about a dozen signs and says like 15 words. I should probably list them, but I can't think of them all right now. My mother thinks that all the signs I use with her will prohibit her from learning to talk, however my daughter is already proving my mother wrong

My middle used it and caught on really quickly to it. lol But once she started saying sentences around 13-14 months she signed along with her words. Did till about 1.5 yrs old.

I used a little on my oldest when he was younger. He has speech problems (still does) and his therapist instructed us to do so. It seemed to prohibit him from using actual words for awhile, but eventually he picked it up, dropped the signing, and is speaking in leaps and bounds now.

That's what B does as well. She'll babble something to me, throw some audible words in there, and sign what she can lol

I get a lot of comments and compliments on how well DD talks. She talks clearly and uses a lot of sentences (for just turning 2, anyways). She still signs some words she says. I hope I can continue to teach her some sign language.

Does she sign and say them at the same time? I can't wait for B to start talking more along with signing

I couldn't agree more. B has been whiney lately and it's so nice to be able to ask her what she wants or what's bothering her, and she can tell me to an extent.

With the words we first taught her to sign, yes. Not so much the newer words or words we didn't focus on much. I need to find my baby sign dictionary so I can teach her the signs for the colors.

Awesome! B does that with milk, which was her first sign.
