Cervix check at home?
posted 5th Nov
I was on one of my google search fixes and found a site that described several ways to tell when a women is dilated. It also said that women can check at home and that it should feel like puckered lips, using each finger as a cm measurement. Sounds crazy I don't even think I would know what I'd be feeling for. So my curiosity hit me, have any of you ladies done this check at home?

Self checks are great!
A great way to cause premature dilation (before 36 weeks), rupture of membranes too early (break your water before labor starts causing other labor complications like infection or dry birth, etc), or just plain cause an infection that could cost you your uterus...
You shouldn't do it unless you've had someone experienced help you do it a few times so you know what you're doing, what to feel for, and what precautions to take---and NEVER before 36/37 weeks!

I tried to check my own but have short, stubby little fingers so it didn't work

This was the website they described it in full detail if you ladies are interested. I have an appointment this wens day so Ill wait until then to know if it's changed at all. It does seem useful during the last bit of pregnancy.

I check like every single day. You'll find some people who think its bad. Even some drs who think its impossible for a woman to find her own cervix!! It's completely safe though, just wash your hands and be careful.

I looked that up on another site and it talked about how the finger width from the top of the uterus to the bone between the breast can be a determination of how dilated you already are without a cervical check. Sounds very confusing if you ask me

The cervix check? I wonder if I can convince my husband to try...convince ha he may just enjoy it to much, but if I don't know what I'm looking for I doubt he will ;)

There is nothing wrong with a woman getting to know her own body and checking her cervix. Just don't man handle it. Be gentle and make sure your hands are clean. Its not much different than a penis and fingers being in there. Unless your membranes are bulging, and you are being rough...you don't really risk rupturing your own membranes. Again, it wont be any different than penis'/fingers. With that being said, yes, I check mine...when I can reach. So far mine has been too high to reach with this pregnancy. When you can reach it feels like a ball with a hole in the middle, or lips puckered....and its just as you said, each finger is a cm. Last time I was pregnant I guessed myself to be 3cm. My dr checked me and I was 3-4cm. So I was pretty accurate.
