Luckily DD doesn't have a habit of it, but she has knocked a LO down during a playdate. I got down to her level, told her it was not nice and mommy won't tolerate her acting like that, and made her say she was sorry. She is only just now turning 2.

as a mother of two toddler boys
i let them hit and do whatever they want
time outs wont work
neither does giving a little spank
they dont do it to other kids so im good in that department

what i used to do was hold their hands close to their body and not talk or try to reason with them they wont understand just hold them until they cry and chill for a minute or two
but its exhausting when they are beating each other ecery 5 minutes

Your post reminded me of this picture I saw on FB the other day. Idk if my brother and I would both have made it out of this shirt alive when we were growing up. lol

I always look at the need behind the behaviour. Then i guide him with how he should meet that need appropriately. It will be different for different kids at different ages even at different times of the day, so i'd need a specific example of why he was doing it in relation to how i'd respond.

This is in parents with toddlers so i'm guessing he's young? It's the same thing overall though - see why he was doing it, empathise - tell him what i see and why i think he's doing it, explain why it's not a good method to what he needs, and then teach him what he should do. Most things have an emotional cause so it's just teaching how to go about those things more successfully. So if he's hitting because he's too young to understand how to interact, then you teach him how to go up and say hi. If he's doing it because he's scared/overwhelmed, then you teach him how to back off and comfort/centre himself. If he's doing it because he's mad, then you teach him how to express that safely and be proactive in resolving the problem. The older he is the more you teach him and the more he can explain and problem solve with you.

Toddlers are only learning for the first time, so they need support and guidance, and punishment is the opposite to that. On their first try i feel it's too detrimental to tar them with the negative brush from the get go.

he does play nice but it starts when the other kids are throwing things or not playing fair. He is a sweetheart and everyone tells me is just a faze.

i still laugh when i see that
if i put my boys in it it would be like putting a cat and a dog in a box and shaking it

Lol! I can imagine. Dh and I are thinking about more kids. DD does fairly well with others so far, but she doesn't have to see them every day. lol

well thats good
theres nothing wrong with him
kids just do that because they have no other way of showing displeasure
when they get older they call each other names nothing to worry about

any mother who reacts like "omg your child is a beast you should keep him on a leash" is kidding themselves thinking they have perfect angels
i just say "sorry they dont know any better"
if they give me the stink face i add "you are welcome to teach them not to do it, you will get no where"

i would start when they are close in age
my sisters and i are 9 and 13yrs apart and we dont have any sort of bond until recently bc my sister is 14 and shes a huge a nerd like me.still dont like her.

but with my kids (2yrs apart) they may hit each other and pull each others hair but they love each other they cant sleep without the other they cant shower apart. its awesome how close they are.
