I think it looks like he's looking at the camera. He doesn't look disconnected to me at all. Looks like a normal boy school picture.

I found the answer....his helper Ms. Ritchie went with him. He was probably just looking at her because my specific words were MAKE HIM SMILE and not his cheesy "I look like something is wrong with me" smile but a nice smile. (you'd have to see that smile to know what I'm talking about).

So in hind sight, at least I didn't get a picture with that smile. This is far better.

He said his helper was there with him, I'm betting he was just looking at her.

You can't tell. I'm telling you, this is completely average school picture. He looks handsome.

oh makes sense then but I thought it usually had proof all of the entire picture so people couldn't do that

Honestly with Autism, I think your lucky you got him even looking in the direction of the Camera. To me it does look like he is looking at someone beyond the camera, but atleast he is looking and participating as much as he can at that moment. My son is also Autistic, And most of the time wont make direct eye contact with the camera, and if he does it only because i caught him off guard lol. Most kids School pics come out weird anyway, nothing wrong with the one you posted its no differnt than what most kids I dont think. That is why I never order school pics, I just do my own kids pictures.

Mine can be so off. He'll either be looking at the camera with this over the top cheesy smile that just makes him look special or he will give us this look.

So looking back if I have to choose one of the two. I choose this one!

Nothing wrong with being special   You cant change autism so might as well just embrace it. Not trying to sound mean, but just be carefull with how you approach how he acts, he obviously doesnt do this on purpose and if you talk to him about how he smiles weird or looks weird, he is going to get a complex. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this picture other than the simple fact its a school picture that looks like a school picture.

No that's why I told the teacher about it. And not him. I just told him smile for me please! and then told the teacher to see if they could get a "normal" smile.

We totally embrace Jacob's "weirdness" we tell him that it's ok to be different. And that it makes him that much better than everyone else.

Oh I am sure you do, I just tend to have very strong feelings when it comes to Autism, obviously since my own son has it as well. I hate when ppl say negative things about it as if its some sort of bad thing. I personally dont like the word weird, it rubs me the wrong way i guess. I prefer unique

This is my son Brodie
you can see he looks in the general direction of the camera, but not directly at it]

This is a typical smile we get from him, the tight lipped almost look of pain smile, when i try to get him to actually make eye contact with me, so would rather him just do what makes him feel comfortable.
This one is one of my favorites at about 3.5
