Gun rights

posted 5th Nov
At least in Wyoming if you are committed to the state mental hospital on an involuntary hold you lose your gun rights for the rest of your life. Do you think this is right? These people did not do anything "wrong" in the eyes of the law.

In california there is a 5 or 10 year limit i think once you have been released that you are not allowed to own a gun. I know that because that happened to my grandpa because of my uncle... Lots of drama I won't go into

However I fully support the right to bear arms. I also believe that violent criminals and those who have been committed should have restrictions because it means they are stupid or crazy. Though criminals will own a gun whether it is legal or not :/

Eh, my boyfriend can't own a gun because he was committed when he was 7 years old. He reported his dad for beating him on a regular basis, and it was hushed up and blamed on him. Apparently he was "unstable" because he became hysterical when they called him a liar and told him that he was going to have to go back to live with his parents. His family thought the "family name" was more important than a person's future.
Saying that, I'm sure there's plenty of people who shouldn't have a gun because they are genuinely unstable.
Maybe if they had a way to appeal it, to have themselves re-evaluated to see if they should still be banned or if they can be cleared? I don't know.

I don't know if I fully agree with the "for life" part, but it doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies that's for sure..

It depends on the situation for me. I was admitted to a drug & metal rehab/institution. I was admitted for drugs and was diagnosed bipolar while I was there. I feel like I should be able to own a gun. I wouldn't use it to go on a killing spree or anything but I would like to be able to protect my family. If some people have extreme mental illness then I think they shouldn't be allowed to carry. It needs to be determined on a case by case basis.

Better be safe than sorry.

There have been people who committed felons that are totally rehabilitated. However many are not. I wouldn't want them to have a gun either.

Not everyone who's been committed is completely insane.

True...but clearly they needed mental help or they wouldnt be committed.

However, I am a bit biased because I don't think anyone should own a gun just for the hell of it.

I agree. But it's entirely possible that the problem was temporary. That was what gave me the idea of an appeal type thing.

Yeah, it would be an idea. But, I think it would put the state at too much liability making sure they appeal the right people. If one slipped through and did something drastic, they would point the finger at the government.

I wouldn't want someone with mental issues to be gun owners. Treatment/ medication or not...if the treatment ends or if they stop taking their medication then they could be very dangerous. Maybe it depends on what they're hospitalized for.

Do you know how many people don't ever get committed but still aren't on any medications and are freely wondering around?

I'm sure there are many, but that doesn't mean we should give those that we know have been committed a free pass.
