Why would they even make an observation area without mesh? To get a "closer" look?   So people can lean out? That is just asking for an accident like this. The mom obviously should have never put her child up there but there shouldn't have been an opportunity to do so with an animal like that imo. I think this is the most horrific thing I've ever read

Ice gone to many zoos and most of the exhibits are open exhibit. Allot of it is for pic ops, who wants a net in their picture.
Why didn't the mom put him standing on the side with a net?
I seriously can't see past the stupidity.there is glass he can see though at the bottom. Why would you not hold your two year old. And why if you choose to stand him up would you choose to stand him where there is not meeting. I don't think the zoo should hold any blame at all personally.

Obviously it was stupid, I wouldn't have let my LO anywhere near that opening. I just don't understand the point of the opening but I've never been there so I'm trying to rationalize something I've never seen. I've been trying to look up pictures but I can't find a good one.

Like I said I thinkthe only real reason for it is to get good photos.

Also maybe they feed the dogs from there??

Why didn't she go in after him?! I know its a 14ft drop but I would jump it would hurt less than hearing your child's blood shuddering screams as he's killed.... I would try my best to do something! Ugh I wanna cry just thinking about it I need to hug my DD.

No actually, I haven't done anything stupid like her. The worst mine has done is roll off the couch. Once. There's a difference in something "not so smart" and DEADLY.

Yes I have done stupid things with my children but putting my child up on a railing would not be one of them. Perhaps it's my fear of falling, I just wouldn't do something like that. Children are wobbly (some adults too). I'm a cautious person and always think the worse is going to happen.

I believe the dogs could have killed the child AND a full grown adult. If you read about them, they are terribly vicious animals.

African dogs are an endangered species, so I can argue that their continued existence trumps that of one human.

And it wouldn't bring tte boy back.

If anyone should be euthanized its the stupid bitch of a mother who killed him. Cop on sense dictates that an angled surface+top-heavy toddler= disaster.

Although there is speculation that it wasn't an accident. The way the top of the fence was angled the boy should have fallen backwards, not forwards.

People need to take some accountability for their actions and not blame a pack of animals that were only doing what they are meant to do.

This!

A lot of times when a parent's negligence kills their child, you hear people saying "Oh, don't hold them legally accountable, they've suffered enough," or something to that extent. BUT, if the kid was with any other adult that does the same thing, people WANT them to be charged!

Why should an aunt, babysitter or teacher be held to a higher standard than a child's own parent?!

That one was probably the dominant member of the pack and still just doing what his nature dictated.

It makes me sick that an endangered animal died for some stupid human's foolishness.
