in florida you can only have up to either $2000 or $2500 in any bank account (all together). if they catch you with over, your smurf gets canceled.

anyway, yes they should be allowed to have a savings account lol. i would hope the government would WANT that.

I know that disability doesn't count as temporary assistance (even though, in a best case scenario, it would be for whoever is having to apply).

However, it does make me happy that so many people think you should be able to have emergency money.

I know it's illegal for me to keep back money from my check, but I'd even go so far as to have someone open up a bank account and give me a card for it if it meant being able to give my baby a Christmas and not have to ask someone for money like a teenager when school time came around.

I'm not sure.. I don't know how people on assistance can even live on the amount of money they get monthly nevermind be able to put some aside..

I work in assisted living homes & we had a resident who had already purchased her burial plot & had a fund to pay all the funeral costs & since it was over $2000 they said that she couldnt receive medicare anymore since she had that money. So she ended up selling it off and reapplied when that money was gone. Her rent for the center was 2500 a month plus her medication costs, that money didnt last all that long

There must be something else to it. From what I understand to qualify for medicare you just have to be old. My parents are wealthy, my dad's on medicare (retired plastic surgeon), and my mom will be on medicare in a couple of years. I don't know if they have burial plots but they sure do have a whole bunch of money tied up in other places.

I think its because medicare was paying most of her "living costs" at the assisted living home. If yoou just get the medical one its different. They have several different ones. part A, B ect....
But I could be wrong

Ahh that could be why. I bet that is why actually because that makes a lot more sense. Still sucks though.

I know I mean its not like she was hoarding her money. She actually thought ahead & wanted to make sure things were taken care of when she passes. I don't think it should count as an assett against her

We've been on assistance since June, dh lost his job in March. We get medical, cash & food stamps. We're both full time students, and I get fafsa for school but that usually goes on bills & our kids pretty quickly. What we get every month isn't enough to set money aside, but we did receive a $450 check from his 401k last month & decided to keep it stashed in case of any emergency. It came in handy when the brakes of our car decided to go to smurf last week. How sad to see that some people feel because we are on assistance we should not have been allowed to have money saved for situations like that. We would have been screwed without it.
