re: What do you think about obstetrics in America?

Quoting xTJ:" Wow you guys replies have shocked and saddened me quite a bit. I mean by all means the UK is viewed by ... [snip!] ... Urgh yeah it is actually highly upsetting how uninformed women seem to be and the high risks involved because of this  "

It sucks even more when you're high risk, like myself. Midwives typically don't take on high risk women here in the US and doctors make you think your baby wont make it out alive unless you do everything they say.

Oh yes if you are high risk here in the UK then you will have both Midwives and Dr's heavily involved in your pregnancy and you will be monitored much more closely. If the risk is in having a natural birth of course you will have a c section and what not. However generally a woman wouldn't even have to see a Dr during birth here never mind have one come anywhere near her. I mean I was 20 years old, first child, in labour for 3 days, had gas and air then pethidine then eventually an epidural, pushed on my own for 20 mins, had a tiny tear, few stitches, went home the next day and was up and about like normal within that time, no issues, no distressed baby and I never once seen a Dr. Perfectly happy and healthy child and happy Mother. That is pretty much the normal situation here. To hear of someone having to have pitocin, forceps or c section and having Dr's involved is something no one wants and would be viewed as a pretty horrendous, risky, intrusive situation by all. A woman that has went through something like that would be pretty distressed herself going through that. I know a few women such as my cousin and friend who had those experiences and they were pretty upset and took a while to get over it physically.

Ok so I have just finished watching it and I can actually say there wasn't anything biased in at all. There wasn't one single thing the programme told me that I didn't already know and not because I am some expert in child birth but because this is very very basic and standard information here. From the moment we go to our first appointment here we start getting informed about everything, we are given free British medical books outlining all of the information in this programme, we are reminded of and discuss all of these issues and options and risks at all ante natal appointments, there are free classes ran by the NHS that are just full of information. I mean if you've been pregnant in the UK you know ALL this smu*f and I'm not talking about the 37 year old hippy woman who has done her own extensive research, I'm talking about the 15 year old pregnant girl that hasn't a clue who her "baby daddy" is would know all this smu*f that has just been on this programme and to think that the people responsible for delivering babies in your guys actual Hospitals don't seem to be aware of some of the most basic things, oh yeah it's pretty frightening :/
