Scratching

My son has almost always scratched himself as a nervous thing.
I'm sure that he has inherited some anxiety from me, but even when he was really small he would scratch his legs almost raw whenever he was nervous/shy.
More recently he has been scratching his butt...so now not only are his thighs red and sore, so is his butt.
Have any of you dealt with anything like this?
