room design diy... ideas for living rooms?

So we moved into a new place in August and it's huge compared to what we had before. We got rid of our old couch because it couldn't fit and now we have a pretty bare living room. We've got a rug, a built in shelf and a TV in there... that's pretty much it. I'd like to do something cool with it to make it both kid and adult friendly but I've never taken on a project like this so I'm not sure where to start. Since we're doing fine without a couch I thought maybe I could find some comfy alternative to that and I don't want to blow a lot of money, either. Another consideration is that I think we'll probably be moving in the next two years (if not sooner) so I don't want to do lots of huge, permanent changes that I wouldn't be able to take with me wherever we go next (although a few small ones would be fine, I'm sure).

Where should I start? Any suggestions? Help!

My living room is smaller than that! I absolutely hate our furniture, but I don't want to buy new stuff. lol.

Maybe under the design or home decor categories. I've never looked for those specific things though. I can look later tonight though.
