Thinking of asking for Gtube

posted 4th Nov
DD doesn't eat well and never has. She just had like 2 weeks of decent eating but then after 1 step forward it's like he's taken 2 back. Now the Dr wants her off her bottle but she will not take formula from a sippy cup. I don't know how to get nutrients in her. She's already Failure to Thrive...if she stops bottles I am pretty sure she would have to be admitted.

Every day is a constant fight between bottles and food. Our relationship is strained and her development is lagging more and more cause we have so little time to work on development...I don't know hat to do anymore.

Anyone have advice? She has Dr appt on Tuesday, should I ask?

Why the hell would he take her off her bottle if that's how she prefers to eat and she is already failure to thrive? First off, I would find another doctor. Can they give you something as a supplement for her with extra calories? How old is she?

I wouldn't WANT my child to have a G-Tube unless it was really needed.

I would never give anyone a G-tube unless is was absolutely necessary for survival.
I worked in a home where most of the people had gtubes, and they were horrible.
I would get another doctor, first of all.
And shes YOUR child. If you feel the bottle is best for her, give her the damn thing! Espcially if that's the only thing she'll take.

They want her weaned because she is 15 months/12 adjusted. I can't give her anything else for calories because she will not eat anything at all. We've tried soo many things. She wants to eat plastic, wood and other inedible things :/

I don't want her on a Gtube, but I also don't know what to do at this point. She's falling further and further behind developmentally.

When I worked with them, they always stunk, the people who were on them were really underweight, they're hard to maintain, they got infected, etc.

If they stink they are not being taken care of properly. They are VERY easy to maintain. They have the tube because they are underweight (it is to aide in nutrition). And again they should not get infected if cared for properly. Cleaning the insertion site takes one minute. And if a dressing is applied it shouldn't get too dirty.

Get a new dr and discuss it with them. My brother had one, it sucked but its what he needed. Not something to take lightly but if its necessary then its necessary. Good luck mama.

Is the doctor giving you any kind of reason for why she may be refusing food?
I would honestly find a new doctor. It seems like this one isn't taking into consideration how fragile she is at this point and taking away her main source of nutrition when she is FTT would be absolutely idiotic.

Seek opinions elsewhere- and maybe they will suggest a feeding tube. Is she really abnormally skinny, or is she just tiny in general? How much does she weigh? And how much does she eat a day? Some kids just aren't big eaters and if she is small in general her intake would be significantly less.

Is she seeing a GI doc, speech or occupational therapist? Or maybe a feeding clinic? I'm assuming there isn't a medical reason for not eating other than simply food aversion?

I would suggest discussing some of these things with your Dr (if not already doing them) and maybe getting a second opinion from a GI if you don't have one.

I know it's hard for parents to consider a g-tube...and I would never encourage anyone to get one quickly or without serious consideration. But I know they have made a ton of kids/parents lives easier to ensure proper nutrition, weight gain, medication, fluid intake, etc. And has taken the stress off your entire focus being about forcing the foods. It's all very specific to each child's situation. Good luck!

Quoting *Cade*Mak*Col*:

The Dr is new and just getting to know her. We just moved, The Dr wants us to wean her bottle since she's adjusted 1 year and also get her on a toddler formula instead. Also there's concern about her teeth since she already has an anterior cross bite. She doesn't seem to be forcing it, so i will see what she says when we see her this week.

She did refer her to a feeding clinic but it's not for another month and we've already been waiting 1.5 months. I just want to get an idea of all our options.

She was IUGR, about 3 weeks behind in growth when born at 27 weeks. She's never been able to maintain on the charts. She's 15 months actual/12 adjusted and 29 inches and we believe now is 16 lbs. She's skinny but I think that'sa just the IUGR. Her bottles are even a struggle and she takes 4 a day anywhere from 5-8 oz of 26 calorie neosure.
And she is quite literally refusing ALL food right now, even her favorite stuff.
