So if in the end one vote wouldn't make the difference...

Why is the country so wrapped up in the voting process...why is so much money spent on it (from the campaigns and the voting process itself)...

Is it just to give the people the "feel" that they get a say?

I'm genuinely curious. I'm not a citizen but I'm the process of becoming one. And during times like this (election time) I always hear how it's so important to choose the leader of the US, and how the people have the power so on and so forth. How it's your civic duty to vote....

oh no   I meant the OP itself...like it's focusing more on the election of the president. Sorry, I should have been more specific. lol

Because if people think they're choosing a leader, they won't revolt when the leader that "they chose" takes away their rights and spends them into a depression.

Because the electoral collages should vote in the way the people vote but they don't....

This. The people's vote isn't what's counted.

I don't think anyone really knows for sure. The fact that the electoral college has the ability to choose whomever they want, despite how the majority in their district vote is pretty suspicious to me. Having an electoral college at all seems unnecessary, if they were going to go off of the public's vote.

I think having the electoral collage is dumb and its something that we need to get rid of but that won't happen

It could, but it would cause a revolution, I'm sure. IMO that's exactly what needs to happen.

Pretty much is all a gimmick. They can make you think what they want.

The electoral college works. It's not perfect but it's pretty darn good.
It ensures a voice for those who would have none, otherwise.

A straight democracy can easily lead to mob rule.

Think about this: If we could have as many parties and choices as everyone says that they want, we would have to include EVERYONE. Jill Stein, Ron Paul, Gary Johnson....all of them, would be on the ballot. What good would come from splitting the vote 10 ways? ONLY ONE person can win the presidency. Someone would win and the person that did win would do so with only a very small percentage of the vote.

I don't want only 11% of the population choosing a president for me.

Your vote still counts. Even moreso in the primary election. We, the American public, get to vote twice.

So, the way it "should be" is to allow votes to be split in 10 ways and to allow a very small percentage of voters to dictate the fate of the other 90%?

How is that better than what we have now?

But from has been said in this thread, and if I'm understanding correctly...with the Electoral College in place, doesn't that mean that an even smaller percentage of people get to choose the president? There's 538 people in the electoral collage. so that's 538 people choosing for the whole US?
