Sure they can! I didn't know they even did that.... until I got a letter in the mail saying I was clean of all drugs (which I though well yeah duh! I don't do drugs.. but then puzzled me why they did it in the first place, I was told they won't deal with moms who aren't clean of drugs)

it might be because you guys are from different states different states have different laws maybe. i dont know.

if your office does drug tests they do have to inform you before...usually in all that paper work you sign when you are a new patient. just like a job has to ask your permission or have you sign a form saying you consent to random drug tests. i have worked for "clean" places (nursing homes). its not any different if your a patient..a patient is a customer and they can not do it without your consent. if you were suprised by a drug test, its prbly because everything wasnt read.

oh i didnt see that when i did my paper work i read through it too. she has the same ob as me.

It depends on the state... I am a nurse in GA and random drug tests are not typical they have to have a good reason to drug test here but I don't know about there.

I know someone who was refused an epidural when she was admitted into the hospital for delivery b/c there was pot in her system. After hours of arguments they finally gave in and let her have one.

They cannot test without her consent during the pregnancy. However, if any complications arise during the pregnancy or birth or they suspect it, they will do a drug test. Happened to a girl I knew- her baby separated from her uterus and it wasn't something that was normal, and they tested her as she was undergoing a C-section and tested positive for marijuana. And yes, they do involve DSS and child protective services if it comes back positive.
