sleeping through the night?

posted 3rd Nov
because DD has bad reflux and has been sick this past week her doctors both suggested letting her sleep in her swing, we started doing this about a week ago and has been sleeping though the nights! doesnt wake up for feedings or changes! i was worried she wouldnt be eating enough but i keep track of it from morning until bedtime and shes still eating 25 plus oz a day. i read most babies dont do this until their 6 months... i know her doc said it was great for us especially since i have been on and off dealing with PPD. but part of me worries it isnt ok for her to sleep through the night? i dont know why. i mean, if she was in her bassinet she would be waking still atleast two times...

my two babies that didn't have reflux slept through the night right away, baby 1 at 2 days old and baby 3 at 1 week old, my baby with reflux would wake many times a night if she was flat and would only wake once or twice once she was propped up

All my babies slept through the night since birth. As long as they are healthy and eat enough, its totally fine.

But I honestly wouldnt allow baby to sleep all night in a swing, that is a really bad habit to start. It will be frustrating and hard to get lo in to a crib pr bassinet etc....if the swing breaks and you cant get a new one, or they out grow it very fast.

My lo is now 9 months and still sleeps all night 10+ hrs every night.

the difference is that when you don't prop up a baby with reflux they can die by choking on their own spit up, I'd rather create a habbit than bury my child.

Yes I know that my middle dd had reflux as a baby. I still wouldnt use the swing, she slep in her crib, propped up with one of these, as does my 9 month old, who can not lay down to sleep due to a medical condition that prevents her from being able to breath through her nose.

Its better then a swing.

My son started sleeping through the night at 6 weeks. He had to have special formula bc he spit up so much. He would wake if he slept on his back so for the sake of him not choking on his own spit up we let him sleep on his tummy. He was a large baby and had great head/neck control.
My daughter is starting to be the same way. She will be a month old Friday. If she lays on her back she doesn't sleep well, and often spits up no matter how well we burp her and delay laying her down. We ended up buying a wedge that goes under her crib sheets, and she will sleep on her side like that without problems. Right now she is waking up once at night and I have a feeling within the next few weeks she'll be sleeping though. As long as your baby is happy, and eating the same amount then I think everything is fine. Babies will wake up if they're hungry, so your baby seems to be tolerating it just fine.

Where can I find one of those? That's awesome.

i think the main reason she is sleeping so well is because she startles her self awake... i watch her when shes in her bassinet, she will have her legs up and as soon as they drop she wakes up and cries. the swing keeps her confined. im not worried about the transition. my cousin let her babies sleep in a swing for the same reason until they were almost 6 months. i just wasnt sure if it was bad that she slept through the night so young.

Ours was donated by sick kids hospital for my dd, they retail around 430.00 to buy one, we looked into it. I think the only place you can get them through is thehospital, but they do have this kind you can buy elsewhere

They are alot smaller but does the same, babies r us carries them

It is a preferable alternative but unfortunately is usually much more expensive than most people have to spare.....when I was looking at them 4 years ago in Canada they were in the $1000 range

another thing we did was we swaddle her and propped her up and on her side in one of those full 'C' shaped nursing pillows with a receiving blanket rolled up in the same shape under her to support the gap (if that makes sense). Our pedi told me to have her sleep in that up at my head (the fact that she was at my head and in a nursing pillow made it highly unlikely that there would be any trouble with rolling in her direction) and that way my breathing would regulate hers as well as preventing the reflux.

where's the support craddle? aren't they just going to slide down it during the night as they squirm?

No its just a few inches thick, it can go under the crib mattress or on top, it just slightly elivates the child, not like the other ones.
