HELP with Reflux so bad that baby is choking BAD

posted 3rd Nov
My son is 7 weeks old and has reflux REALLY bad. He has been in the NICU since he was born (for other issues) and just came home Friday  BUT, since he was not in the NICU for reflux, and they made him appt with pediatrician for Nov. 9, they would not write anything for his reflux; however, it is REALLY bad, extremely thick, and he chokes and even stops breathing sometimes. I have a suction bulb in every room bc of it, but when he is sleeping, or you do not hear it...that's when he stops breathing bc of the choking. Even when he does not stop breathing, and he chokes, it's AWFUL....and SCARY!! I have Zantac Rx for a baby (a relatives son) and was wondering if any other BG Mommas have had to deal with this, if so what should the dosage be for a 9lbs 3oz baby (7 weeks old)? I can not read the dosing info on the bottle bc it is faded. My 4yo DS had this problem as well, just not SO EXTREME, but I do not remember how much I gave him. It is so bad that I CAN NOT wait until the 9th to do something. I know to elevate him for at least 30 minutes after feeding but I need more advice/info, as well as any dosing info from other Mommas with babies that have reflux.
Thanks in advance!!

DO NOT give him someone else's medicine! If it's that bad go to the ER and get a Rx of his own, that used to happen to DD but the doctor gave her a couple of things that helped until she outgrew it.

I actually have a bunch of posts about this. My DD was the SAME way. It would come out of her nose, she'd turn red, she'd choke, I'd bulb syringe, she'd sleep in a boppy so she was elevated, etc. We tried all the medicines and NOTHING worked. Switched formula from regular, to sensitive, to soy, to alimentum (hypoallergenic) and it got a little better with that. The medicines made it ten times worse so we took her off. She's 4 months now and doing better. Her Ped said it was an underdeveloped something or other in their throats that doesn't know how to open/close properly. :/ I hope you get some relief soon, I remember being so scared the first time she choked. We even took her into the walk-in clinic because I was so worried.

PS DO NOT GIVE ZANTAC WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM DOCTOR. It gave my daughter HORRIBLE side effects. Vomitting, diarrhea, drowsiness, etc.

zantac will not do anything to stop the choking. it is an acid reducer so that when the baby spits up or vomits internally (silent reflux) it won't wear the esophagus down with the acid and cause pain/injury.

infant zantac also has a short shelf life, so, aside from it not being a good idea to medicate a NICU baby without dr's supervision, it probably won't work any way because you said the label is faded. it is probably too old.

again, zantac will not stop the choking/reflux from happening.

DD had reflux really bad until about 10 months old, & like another poster said the medications she was prescribed didn't help so we also took her off them around 9 months & switched her to a soy based formula after trying a few others with no luck. Soy helped some & then switching to a rice based formula helped the most...but that was nearly 3 years ago, apparently there is something wrong with rice formula now & it's no longer sold? I can't remember but thankfully she wasn't on it long & we only used it to supplement since my milk supply was low so she rarely got it anyways.

I would see if the pedi could see your baby sooner or go to an urgent care or ER & see about getting a Rx because they might try something else instead. DD was on 2 meds at the same time & it still didn't help. Hopefully they can figure out something for you guys!!!

You could try giving some cereal in the bottle with the formula. My neighbours son has reflux pretty bad and they had her put cereal in 1 or 2 bottles a day also with baby zantac.

Quoting kaaw:" zantac will not do anything to stop the choking. it is an acid reducer so that when the baby spits up ... [snip!] ... because you said the label is faded. it is probably too old. again, zantac will not stop the choking/reflux from happening."
The bottle got wet, label faded & they wrote infant zantaz to my 4yo when he was one week old for his reflux, worked like a charm. I appreciate everyone's advice and information. Thank you all very much, I have it from here
THANKS AGAIN!!
No need to post anything else, NOT BEING RUDE, I know it could seem that way since you can not hear me, like I said, I've taken care of it   IF I CAN DELETE THE POST ALL TOGETHER, I WILL...TO AVOID CONFUSION, JUST NEED TO KNOW HOW   I haven't tried yet, it might be easy and right in front of my face, lol! If not....HELP PLEASE
