Im just now finding out..

My almost 4 yr old son has Autism...

Im kind of sad, but I knew it! I told the dr. at his 3 yr appt that something was different about my baby... Dr. said it was just his age he'll grow out of it. Well he started school and the teacher told me he was uncontrollable and he didnt want to participate. They did a developmental test and he did very poorly, they referred me to Bi-County special ed and if it wasnt for them my dr wouldnt have ever listened to me...

now what tho? Nothing changes for me... But what I do? I need to find books and information to educate myself.... and especially the ppl around me..

advice... help anything is appreciated

I teach kids on the severe end of the spectrum.

The parents who seem to be the most adjusted to the diagnoses have reached out to the community. A lot of places have support groups. I love Jenny McCarthy's books,

My friend cut gluten out of her family's diet because her youngest son is autistic. He could barely communicate and what he did say didn't make sense. It's been less than a year and the difference is amazing! Another friend cut out gluten, traded dairy for soy and has been supplementing omega 3's but her son was a bit more difficult and he's changed so much too!


Routine is also very important. They crave routine because it's scary when new things happen. You'll notice after a few weeks that things become easier once he can predict the structure but try not to break it because it can set them back again

Gluten and casein are commonly eliminated from a child's diet. Even my son who's not on the spectrum but had sensory problems and speech delays has excelled leaps and bounds since eliminating gluten. He went from almost nonverbal to a 10% delay in 5 months, no more violent out bursts, easier to transition

Social stories if he is not too severe. Pictures of everything made into a schedule also helps tremendously. My daughter was diagnosed at 2 1/2 and she is almost 5 now. She is not severe but has tested positive. Also check with school to set up an IEP along with therapies to help with anything that has him behind sometimes speech and ot are what they recommend for autistic children depending on how severe. Mine has double therapies meaning she has an individual speech therapy and a group therapy for speech along with an individual ot and a group ot. Good luck momma it's a long road but can be fun.

Its the iep that got my dr to take a look at him closer...

Yup we went "cold turkey" it takes 2 weeks for gluten to completely leave the body but by end of week 1 we were noticing differences by week 2 other people around us were noticing how well he was doing.

We cut it out first then went to his dr after we saw that it helped.

What about the red dye food coloring? We found that certain food coloring like the red dye (forgot the number) when taken out of her food helped with some of the problems like behavior. I haven't completely gone full gluten free with her just because we don't have a health food place here and the choices are extremely limited, but it has helped us by limiting how much gluten she is getting.

We don't give him stuff with added dyes so that's not a worry for us.

We live in a remote area and are able to be GF. Once you get the hang of it it's not to hard to be completely GF.

Oh and dye 40? That's a pretty common one to avoid

Yeah I think it's that one. I just remember to watch out for the red dye in foods.
