Its not like she is being favored...she actually needs the early intervention. He isn't going to look back ass a young adult and despise you for putting her in earlier than him because he will understand later. make special outings to the park and stuff and teach him things in the process...it also give you one on one time with him.

its not about him being left out.....its about meeting the needs of each child as an individual.....she needs these services to help her.....since she cant be in speech alone Im sure the educational program will work with you and her to transition you out of the class....and she isnt the first child who has this anxiety, so I would trust the staff, they will help you through this.....

like we have said for your son....find play groups, do school type activites at home, maybe take him to the local library and do school activites there....

just because one of our children has something, doesnt mean the other should have it as well....when it is there time, they will have it as well....

This!

autistic children are sty in their routine so change is hard but once they get into a new routine it will get easier.

Yes he is. He had private speech therapy from 2 to 3 and started a special needs pre k program right After his third birthday. He is now 4 and has made so much more progress with his full time per k program than speech (even though he does both now).

My youngest wants to go to school too but she can't go until she's 4. That's life. She will understand one day that her brother needed this program to catch him up for kindergarten.

True...

and yeah, we do most of that already. It's more of the actual school setting and interaction with other kids that he needs.

I can't even tell you the huge difference it made for my son being in school vs therapy. It was amazing, he went from almost completely non verbal to communicating directly in just a few weeks. He now goes to a full day and speaks in 3-4 word sentences just since Sept. School will open so much to her.

As for the rest the teachers are trained to deal with these types of situations. Talk with them before she starts and see if you can sit in for the first hour for a few days. In the mean time try taking small breaks away from her during speech. Tell her you have to go potty and she needs to stay there.

Hmm. I guess we'll see about giving it a shot then. I didn't think it was really that much different than going to therapy several times a week, aside from the setting and other children.

And good idea, thanks.

It's because it's a constant setting everyday for a few hours rather than 2 short weekly therapies. They are getting daily help in a small group setting. It's the repetition and the set schedule that really helps them get it. Good luck!

When Cylus was just doing speech therapy at home he wasn't making progress. At first at school he wasn't making progress either. Then they realized he needed PT/OT and has been doing that for a month. We have had a HUGE difference. He is starting to talk non-stop.
