Is it too early for D&D?

posted 3rd Nov
I think not...since we already had a "I hate you BG bitches" post.

But yeah, what are your thoughts on this:
http://shine.yahoo.com/work-money/single-mom-sorry-ever-ok-leave-excuse-instead-165700123.html

If you don' want to read the whole thing: Basically this woman spent almost $140 at a restaurant and didn't tip, she actually wrote the reason why she didn't tip on the receipt (see below)
Single Mom, Sorry: Is it Ever OK to Leave an Excuse Instead of a Tip?

Waiters and waitresses are up in arms over a restaurant receipt posted on Reddit, for which a customer used her status as a single parent to avoid leaving a tip.

The $138.35 was paid with a Visa credit card, but in the space for a gratuity, someone simply wrote, "single mom sorry." And, at the bottom of the bill, a compliment: "Thank you it was great."

"I'm sure $140 could have gotten you and your kids a week's worth of groceries, but instead you spend it on one meal?!" PhoenixSongFawkes, who posted a photo of the receipt on Reddit, wrote. "For shame!"

"And this is why many restaurants automatically charge you X% for a tip when the bill is above a certain amount, or there are a certain number of people in the party," Szos pointed out. "People are scumbags."

But it's not the lack of a tip that's upsetting servers. It's the fact that the customer took the time to whine about being a single mom—and then rubbed salt into the wound by saying the service and the meal were fine.

"It doesn't matter if she tipped or not," wrote PhoenixSongFawkes, who has been a server for seven years and posted the photo for a friend. "The point of this post was that her writing 'sorry single mom' was unnecessary."

Given that waiters earn much less than minimum wage, they rely on their tips in order to earn enough money to pay the bills.

"I wish everyone could work one week as a server and then try to tell me it's not hard. The better you are at it, the easier it becomes, but it can still be very tough. Mentally and physically exhausting. And the fact is, we make $2.13 an hour," explained PhoenixSongFawkes. "If restaurants ever did change to just minimum wage, good servers would be hard to find. Because no one would work like that and put up with that for minimum wage."

Some readers were quick to point out that tipping is not the norm in other countries. Others refused to believe that the receipt was real.

"Looks fake. Handwriting doesn't match between the tip note and the thank you note," notbob1959 wrote. "Customer probably left tip in cash so the tip line was left blank."

But most readers recalled their own experiences as waiters and waitresses, and were furious on the waiter's behalf.

"If you're going to eat at a nice restaurant, the tip is part of that experience," Wrote Vikaroo. "If you're a single mom, maybe you should take that $140 and take your kids to Chuck-e-cheese instead."

"Or... spend it on 2 weeks of groceries as well as a couple nights of extremely good home cooked feasts," gryts suggested.

We haven't been able to confirm whether the receipt is for real, but the idea makes us wonder: Is it ever OK to leave an excuse instead of a tip?

and just for the sake of the debate, just pretend this is a real situation, the article stated they haven't confirmed it yet.

If we can't afford to tip, we don't go out.
And the only time we DON'T tip (which has been only once), it's because we've gotten absolutely horrible service.

I know someone posted it in FFA, but IMO, that's bad taste. Unless you get horrendous service, you tip. If you can't afford to tip, go to a grocery store (or, heck, if your excuse is that you don't want to cook.... go to a buffet without servers).

I've worked in a restaurant before, and I NEVER leave without tipping unless I got horrible service. It's really rude.

I was a server before LO and I'd be livid about that. Don't go out if you can't afford to tip, period. People need to make a living too. Servers rely on tips.

I agree, the only reason you don't tip, should be because the service was bad enough that it warranted the lack of a tip. I think it's even worse that she added an excuse, as if that would make things better...IMO it made things a lot worse...specially since so many servers are single moms or struggling in one way or another and I'm sure they don't go around dropping $140 at a restaurant.

The other day I was at Denny's and I watched this woman tip her server (who was also our server who was great) literally just coins. I felt awful for her. Most restaurants do a take out option now. Just get the smurfing takeout if you can't tip.

Are we sure thats even real? The handwriting on the tip line is different than the compliment on the bottom. And after the whole 1% photoshop scam i wonder if this is legit

We don't tip in Australia. But I understand how it works because DH has been to the US a few times and told me about it. $140 is a lot to spend then to try and pull the single mum card is rude! I'd be beyond pissed!

I think that's pretty rediculous not to have enough for a tip when you're spending $140 on a dinner. A questions though: Would it have been worse or the same if she left a $5 or $10 tip and with or with out the same explaination?

Ya know, that's a good point. Regardless I'd still be fuming.

I understand other countries don't tip but I'm sure their waiters are compensated differently right? I really have no idea but I would just assume they aren't getting $2.50 an hour and not getting tips.

In Australia tipping is not necessary or required. Sometime so tip, but generally I don't.

Tonight we had a 90 dollar meal. We left a $2 tip. Why? The service was bad. We waited 25 minutes to have our order taken.

I just think if you can spend 140$ on one dinner you can afford a little more for a tip!

Tipping is one of my biggest pet peeves. I hate going to dinner with my older sister and her husband because they never tip. They have all these excuses including if my BIL's drink gets to under a half full and they dont refill it, they dont get a tip! WTF... It drives me insane and then I end up tipping more because I feel bad.

He also likes to make a big deal when service is a little slow or something to gripe at me for actually tipping.

I had to teach my husband how to tip. (His mother never took them out as kids). He just assumed that since 3$ was okay for the pizza delivery guy, that it was okay for a 50$ dinner. He picked up pretty quick and now is a good server.

I almost always try to tip at least 20%. If the service is slow but the restraunt is super busy then that is why the service is so slow.... waitresses have a lot to do besides wait on just you.

I have only not tipped one time. And we had the most horrible service in a completely empty restraunt. All of our orders were wrong and she was bringing out our food in peices. We went a half hour with my BIL having his dinner and the rest of us without.

Sorry for the rant. No I have never been a waitress. I just know what they actually get paid. Some of these ladies and gentlemen live off of their tips!
