Castor oil

posted 3rd Nov
I had a family friend reccommend taking a tablespoon to maybe get labor started.. I know she has had a homebirth midwife with her last pregnancy but she said it worked with her first.. So not sure if this was reccommended to her or not. I have always heard of taking more (like 2 oz or something and mutiple doses) And am against it. She said she didn't get any of the "usual" problems. Lol. I would still be super scared to take it.. I have been reading about it and read you could rub some on the outside of your stomach and keep it warm and it could possibly help with going into labor too. I really don't want to take it but I'm facing an induction next weekend and if it comes down to it I might try it to avoid pitocin. I'm 41 weeks and 2 days so I'm not trying to induce early labor.. Im just looking for possible options if I don't go into labor soon.. :/

It can be taken safely, but ONLY under the guidance of a medical professional. Please don't try on your own. Personally, I'd rather be induced than smurf in my MW/OB's face when I give birth.

I doubt a doctor recommended it to her. Its very dangerous. You can go up to 42 weeks. For your sake, I'd hope not. Walking & sex.

Eh, most people smurf while giving birth anyways.. I am planning on asking about it at my next appointment. I was just wondering if anyone had heard of taking so little or the rubbing it in thing. I just feel like my body hates me or something. I've been using EPO orally since 34 weeks and vaginally since almost 40 bc I wasn't progressing at all.. And I've been drinking red raspberry leaf tea pretty much my whole pregnancy.. Although not always religiously. And I had a membrane strip 3 days ago (if you didn't read my last post) and had a bunch of contractions but didn't go into labor. I have an ultrasound Monday, and he passes that they will let me go to 42 weeks.. I was gonna ask for an extra day or 2 bc I always ovulate late and my ultra sounds early on we're giving us a 10/27 date not 10/25 but my Ob at the time wouldn't change it bc she said it wouldn't matter.. I just kinda assumed I would go early so I didnt worry about it but it will definately matter to me if we're talking about an induction! Ugh.

Its not about you smurffing. It can cause your baby to pass their first smurf inside and get meconium posioning. It sucks but, just wait.

My midwife told me I could take some if I wanted to but I was too scared, I was almost 2 weeks overdue too. I didn't want to get uncomfortable or have the runs or whatever. But that doesn't happen to everyone. What it does is upset your bowels which in turns upsets your uterus and makes it start contracting, which may or may not put you into real labor. I got 3 sweeps and still no real labour for me until my water sprung a leak.

No, not most people. It's something that CAN happen. Yes, baby can pass Meconium also. I've never heard of Castor Oil used on the stomach, that's new to me. But, if you're only taking a small amount of it orally, all it's going to do is make you smurf. It won't induce you.

Like I said, if you really want to try it, ask your Doctor. It should only be done under their supervision. Don't ever rely on what a friend/family member etc. says was ok for them.

It's not common, but it can definitely happen. There's a lady on here who lost her child shortly after delivery from ingesting their own meconium.

I know it happens but there is no confirmation that castor oil is the cause. All baby's who go over their due date are at an increased risk of it happening, and most women who take castor oil are already overdue, you know?

Yeah I heard that it doesn't have to do with castor oil too. Meconium is associated with post dates pregnancy.. But it has to do with your baby being in distress (which is a risk factor of being induced as well) lol.
Omgosh. I have another sweep Monday of everything is going okay.. Did you have to be induced? I am so scared of pitocin. Kinda ruins my whole natural childbirth plan. Since it doesn't cross the blood brain barrier your body doesn't produces the endorphins to counteract the contractions to help you deal with the pain. I know some people are fine with it but I am kinda against it. I would go to 43 weeks if they would let me..

No my water sprung a leak at home, labour started 20 minutes later and I delivered in under 4 hours. I was at 4cm though before the leak and I was 8cm when I got to the hospital. My son actually pooped as soon as he got out, lol. Luckily I didn't see it and they cleaned it all up quick!

Every l&d nurse I've ever talked to said its pretty common. Like 80-90% they thought.. Bc if you are pushing right then it's actually a good sign. They just clean it up fast and don't call attention to it. But idk.. I'm not really worried about it.
