My son goes to Wednesday night church and they taught him one night that if he gets lost in the woods he needs to just pray and read his Bible. Lets totally forget anything about survival skills.

To me, that's like "praying the sick away"....TAKE MEDICINE! You can pray as well!
Prayer is part of my daily life. But I am called to SERVE OTHERS. Like I said, be the ANSWER to a prayer.
If someone is cold and hungry, you offer up food and clothing. It just makes sense!

I am not religious but it would not bother me at all because they care.
quoteposted 3rd Nov
Im not religious at all, but I even say thoughts and prayers to ppl when its clearly needed and if they are religious, is that weird of me?
So no it does not bother me, I appreciate that someone I know or barely know cares enough to care.
quoteposted 3rd Nov
No and I think it's silly for someone to be offended.

No, it doesn't bother me at all.
After DD was born she had to have a stay in the NICU. I had TONS of people telling me that they were praying for me, sending prayers my way, etc, etc. I'm an atheist, but it was still nice to hear that I was in people's thoughts and that they cared enough to take a moment out of their day to think/pray for me and my daughter. However, whenever someone I know is in a tough situation I'll usually say "I'll be sending positive thoughts".

I believe in God it doesnt bother me. What I do find funny, are those who not believe in God but the moment something scares the smurf out of them or a tragic inncident that happens first thing that they say ..Oh God Please etc etc etc..not all do but alot of people do

I say oh God and I don't believe in the Christian God.
They're not literally addressing God. They're saying a common phrase of fear or surprise that's part of our society.

I'm Christian, and it does bother me sometimes. My grandma said she'd pray for me when I got my tattoo. Some smurfs just say it to be condescending.

Yes! And prayer is also used as an excuse for gossip central! And then there is the whole freakin' "God told me that you need to do (insert whatever) in order to be following his will." As if God is incapable of telling me this message if he really wanted me to have it.

I think she means they say a little prayer like oh God please help me out of this I'm so scared. I don't know if a lot of atheist actually do this though. I honestly don't personally know any atheists.

Ya thats what I meant
My good friends ex husband didnt believe in God until she went into labor at 25 weeks and he prayed and prayed his little boy would survive. He says he believe in God now.

As the old saying goes "There are no atheists in foxholes."
It's not always true, but often times it is.
quoteposted 4th Nov
The "no atheists in foxholes" is kind of silly to me.
And actually super condescending. It reeks of "oh you're not really an atheist/you don't know what you believe/you're just lost/you'll come around" which many of we atheists are very, very used to hearing from religious folk that can't fathom why we don't believe in their god/s.
Sure- some people might go through a tough time and find religion. But to make the assumption that every atheist-or even most atheists (and that's what the phrase does imply) are secretly Christian, whatever is ridiculous.
It's like if I were to say, "oh well- as soon as something horrible happens to you, you'll stop believing in god. Just wait." It's nonsensical, and pretty offensive- no matter how many anecdotal stories there are about atheists praying when in fire turmoil.
Like I said- someone praying for me is fine. What isn't fine are these little phrases that imply that I'm too stupid to know what I do and don't believe in.
I quoted you because you brought up the phrase- this wasn't directed at you, by the way.
