re: Prayers D&D

I don't get upset- I just kind of wonder what would happen if I said as a response what comes naturally to my mind.
Ex: " I have cancer."

Customary response: "I'll pray for you"

My response : "that sucks"

Because my "positive thoughts" won't do smurf. I will be the first to offer monetary help, a babysitter, food- but I would do that privately.

Sometimes it bothers me. Most of the time I'm grateful and will tell them thank you. Sometimes when my old church friends say something like "How's your relationship with God/Jesus? I've been praying for you/about it" etc I get annoyed. It's probably because I've had the same mindset as them in the past and I know what they're thinking, that I'm going to hell.

I can see that response as my first thought/response to the person and doing the same, it makes more sense to me.

Yeah. I'd not go crazy on someone who was in their way wishing me the best. But I follow the thought that ten hands working are worth more than a hundred hands praying.

It's one of those things people should accept and move on from.  

I can understand not wanting your friends to go to Hell, but to ask that question.. I'm not sure, I'd be slightly offended if it was a constant thing.

That's how I feel too. I guess what they're really asking is "are you Christian again yet?". Because I believe in God but not in the same way I did before at all and I'm sure they don't care to hear about that.   I do think good vibes/prayers can help but when it's directed towards me becoming a Christian I just get annoyed.

It doesn't me, it shouldn't bother anyone. They are showing concern. To keep things neutral, I always say that I will keep them in my thoughts.

I love me some Jesus, but I have a visceral reaction when I hear Christianese (church talk) because of some bad church experiences. Bless you, I'll pray for you, etc just makes me feel... Weird. I always remind myself that people mean well or are just saying what they feel is appropriate but it all feels so fake (not saying it is, just feels that way to me)

No...I'm not really religious, but I'm glad someone thinks I'm important enough to pray for.

As long as they're not saying it in a sarcastic manner, cause that's annoying.

And I totally agree with that. That's rude. That's the sort of condescending attitude I hate. I was Atheist for a while when younger, and it didn't bother me when people would offer prayers because whether or not I believed in it, it was still a nice gesture.

I usually say "I'll be thinking of you" just to be nicer, but my step-mom is super religious and always comes back with "what we really need is prayer! The squeaky wheel gets the grease!"

Which, is absurd. By that same logic the kid who died of cancer must just not have gotten enough people praying for them, so God was like "sorry kid, you couldn't pay for that miracle with enough prayers."

Side rant there I guess, haha.

No, it doesn't bother me at all.
Praying is the same thing as hoping in my book.

I am Christian and I pray, but I know A LOT of Christians who think that prayer is all that is needed. It's not.

For instance, if someone is in need, financially, and I'm able to help, I don't JUST pray. I give what I am able and THEN pray.

Instead of just praying, be an answer to a prayer. THAT is being a Christian. Actions speak way louder than words!

Sorry, for no real answer to the OP. Just my 2¢…
