Has anyone had their tonsil's taken out?

Looking for experiences in late teens and older as they say it goes a lot easier with younger patients.. I'm 20, and the doctor decided today that they're coming out. They've been a pain in the ass my whole life so I am relieved, tbh. He summed up the risks and how miserable I will be for 2 weeks and out of commission, how was your experience? Did anyone have to go back to the hospital for complications after the surgery? He said it's like a 50/50 chance or something of it scabbing as it should or something.. I had my jaw broken/wisdom teeth out at the same time so that was pretty brutal, should I expect the same? Worse? I know it's different with everyone but a general idea would definitely help planning for if I'll need someone to watch my son and such.. I always thought the procedure was some small thing but I guess it's not as small as I thought?

He heard a heart mur mur so I'm getting checked for that just to be sure, he thinks I was just nervous though haha

I was 21 when I got mine out. No problems, and he didn't tell me at ALL that it was riskier. Smurfing drs lol. Kinda pisses me off he didnt. You wont be able to talk for a bit. I remember being in bed sleeping a lot, and having to wake up for meds. So I would ask for help.

i got mine out the beginning of the year and it smurfing SUCKED. the first 7 days i felt like death. the medicine they gave me (liquid oxy) just did not like me. obviously its suggested you have something in your stomach when taking such a strong medicine, but obviously since i couldnt eat, just taking it with an empty stomach would make me feel super sick and i just wanted to sleep nonstop. as much as it did suck that first week, i did start to see the light on that 8th day and started to feel 'okay.' although it took me a full month to feel 100 pct, it was definitely worth it

the only cold foods after SUCKED. I was so tired of luke warm mashed potatoes by the end lol.

my dr had me on a strict liquid diet for the first week and then on the 2nd i could move onto things like broth and whatnot.. but even drinking hurt for me so i almost made myself dehydrated which obviously wasnt good. and i remember i puked twice because of the medicine which was the worst! i just cant handle strong stuff like oxy so i was a mess. i did lose 15 lbs in 2 weeks though since i didnt eat anything  

I had mine out when I was 27 it hurts very bad but it is worth it and I would do it again. it only hurts bad for about a week and they give you drugs that help

I had mine out at 18. I lost 20 lbs cause I couldn't eat for two weeks. I also had bad reactions to the pain Meds but I just know I'm glad they can only do it once. My labor was better than getting my tonsils out.

I just remember sleeping and sleeping. And being in serious smurfing pain. And not being able to talk and wanting to die lol.

SO thought i was faking the pain after a few days.. hes like seriously you still feel that bad? he was pissed i was always sleeping and felt like complete smurf. hes like oh your milking it blahblah. i ended up going to my moms house on the 3rd day to just go into a sleep coma and have peace and quiet lol

oh and waking up after the operation was.. interesting. i remember i wanted to open my eyes so bad but couldnt.. but i knew what was going on around me. it was weird and i hated the feeling. and then i kept having the need to stretch my legs and it was pissing me off. the first day i actually felt okay and was like oh sweet this wont be that bad.just remember even though you may feel okay sometimes still remember to take your medicine every 4 hours or as directed. dont wait for the pain to catch up with you!

I would write the things i wanted to say, and at one point i was yell/writing... caps, underlines all that jazz. And SO threw my book lol

Do you remember waking up on the table?They give you meds to kill the anesthesia, and they make you open your eyes before giving you any pain killers to knock you back out.

I got mine out at either 14 or 15. I was crying as I went in for surgery cause I knew I wouldn't be able to eat properly for a while lol. I never got told any risks before.

I woke up so damn sore, I remember having a high pulse rate for days and they had to do a EKG to check it out. I must of bled a lot because I threw up on a few occasions which comes back up as black   The next day they gave me a freaken hamburger to eat for lunch which i pushed aside, like I was going to even be able to eat that. They sent me home that day because the other girl that had hers done was completely fine, so i should be too. Except my tonsils were the size of golf balls. I went home with no pain relief to take and told to eat toast so they wouldnt scab up etc. It was bullsmurf and I refused.

TBH, even after all that... Its was still the best thing they ever did. Every time my tonsils would become inflamed, I would get a chest infection too. No more of that. Good luck

nope, i just remember him saying think happy thoughts, and next thing i knew i was waking up with a nurse saying "kelly, were all done"
