12 Year Son w/ ADHD ***HELP PLEASE***

posted 2nd Nov
He is in the 6th grade and since he started middle school, OMG he has turned into a different child, he thinks he is grown. He is a very smart and intelligent child , but lately he has just gotten into this "I DON'T CARE" attitude, he isn't doing his class work and is always coming home claiming to have no home work. When asked why he doesn't do his class work and lies about having No Home work, his response is " Class Work and Home Work"is pointless.... ughhh Help Please , what is happening to my child , his father and I feel so helpless , we have tried everything to get through to him.... Any and ALL advice is VERY Welcome and Appreciated...

The ADHD thing we have under control, he was diagnosed at 4yrs old, My big issues are more on the change in his attitude, and his train of thought. I just want to get him back on track.

That is his hormones kicking in. It's perfectly normal that things change and interests change. Does he have a new group of friends?

However, puberty can affect how our bodies handle medication. My cousin needed to have his ADHD meds altered slightly once he his puberty.

It could be puberty, testing his boundaries or maybe he is just bored. He may need more structure and you might need to communicate with his school more until you are back to a point where he is doing his homework. We still have to do that for my 15 year old son sometimes.

Since he has ADHD, does he have an IEP at school?

My step-brother is like this. He is now 18 and a sophmore. The number one thing upsets me is that his mom buys him every type of electronic toy their is.... she works hard (in her own way) at getting him to do homework.... point blank... if he won't do it.... take away all toys. Take the door off his room...whatever. Thankfully, he really is a smart kid. He really has turned into a wonderful person... but kids don't understand the conseqences of their actions. It's out job as parents to guide them through it. Is he taking medication? Maybe having him work with music on will help??

I think he is trying too hard to be liked, he's in the 6th grade but he is a little guy, he is always desperate to make friends and he is a joy to be around (usually). He has been doing things that he has never done before and when asked why, he says his friends are doing it, or he says because its cool. The school he goes to is not impressive and I am looking to take him out and possibly home school him. He seems to be hanging out with the wrong crowd and now days you can't be too careful.

Oh also, you can explain the situation to his teacher/s and they will tell you his grades, his test scores and when he has homework so he won't lie about it. It will get better in time. My step-bro was at his worst 6th-9th grade.

We have taken everything away, and we have even tried the reverse way, by giving him something as an incentive. Yes he is on meds and I have not tried the music idea, but I will... Thanks a bunch
